Quick and easy...... What 1911 grips do I buy? I bought a Norinco 1911 Commander( first 1911) and have heard the grips are crap. So to do it right - Do I buy hogue to start? Finger groove or not finger groove? I have medium sized hands. I don't want to buy the bank until later but need something to get use to the pistol with. Any input is appreciated(dealers as well)
I have not received or shot this pistol yet.
Thanks, BH

I have recently tried:

Hogue finger groove. Uncomfortable and interfered with moving hand to hit the mag release.

Pachmyer Signature. Excellent.

Hogue palm swell. The best. Also the cheapest. About $15 on Ebay.

Reviews were all sound...please confirm. Update - I was seeing a little crooked last night so now I see this is a typo for best.....but really EBST haha

Not to sure about finger grooves...I like the idea but you have to have the right hand for them I think.......why are they good?

I have many different styles of grips for my 1911's, and these are my favourite.
What first attracted me to them, was their great looks, but they also feel the best, to me. I have a medium size hand.

I'm not a big fan of finger groove grips on a 1911 (although I do have a set on an IPSC gun). I usually stick to old fashioned checkered grips.

On the other hand, after watching "Longmire" on TV, I'm starting to want a set of staghorn grips, like these -

Somehow, they look like they belong on a working gun, rather than as decoration on a safe queen...

Spend some quality time on the range with your new acquisition to get to know each other better before deciding the grips are crap (based on hearsay). They're more likely to be just "plain Jane" than crap. Once you've shot it a bit you'll find what you do or don't like about the grips. I'm not a fan of finger groove grips myself but that's personal taste.

I have an STI Spartan which has plain traditional checquered walnut (factory) grips and I find they're fine; all I'm thinking of doing is putting some rubber "grip tape" on the front strap. (If I can find any. I know someone around here used to carry 3M 310 rubber tread tape in black but no one has it now!)

ps Ganderite, I didn't know Hogue made palm swell grips for the 1911. Hmmm......

Hogue Palm Swell grips Model 45090

Thanks! And cheap like borscht, too. Good reviews on Amazon.com and MidwayUSA.

I have a pair of Combat Retros for my S&W 625 coming from Ahrends in a couple of weeks. Rather more expensive than borscht, alas, and I'm afraid that I may like his work enough to order grips for other guns.

I have pachmayr finger groove grips and I think they're great. Grippy, soft and grooves fit my hand reasonably.

Another option to consider would be get whatever normal grips you like and add Pearce inserts if you want grooves later on.

"...What 1911 grips do I buy..." The ones that make the gun fit your hand better. However, since you haven't shot the thing yet, don't buy anything until you do. Partial to Pachmayr's myself.

Grips are like boobs;

Not everyone likes the same , and there is 1000's of different ones.

That being said, i prefer slim grips ( 3/16 thick ones) with arched main spring housings.

So, what does this tell us about your preferences in boobs?:p From the above, I'd guess about 32C with wire cups...

Bingo. I don't have large hands but I really like the feel of Hogue finger groove grips... you can squeeze and get a FIRM grip on your pistol

:D No I'm a plant my face and if my nose doesn't touch I'm happy type of guy :p

Thanks for the replies. I guess I'm going to have find a place in Edmonton to try some grips out. I think that's the first step now. Just see what fits right I guess. I have researched most of the suggestions and am having a horrible time deciding. Thanks again!
Cheers, BH
