Resized cases still tough to chamber

Hey reloading gurus, maybe you can help with this one.

I did up some reloads a few weeks ago and this past weekend, I had one round that would chamber but the bolt would not close easily and I did not want to force it should I get a stuck live round in the action. I brought it home, removed the bullet/powder/deprimed and did a test fit and sure enough, it would chamber but the bolt would not close down easily. I figured I must have missed this case during the resizing so I did a FL resize on it and tried it again. Similar issue. It would chamber and the bolt will close but with some good effort. It takes a little effort to lift the bolt but the case extracts easily. Diameter at the base of the shell is 0.468" within 0.473" and OAL is 2.008". I've found 5 cases with similar problems.

Any ideas? I don't have a problem dumping them but just curious as to what causes this? Thanks.

Do you have a Hornady cartridge cases headspace gauge or any case gauge to measure with? If your die is not adjusted correctly you can make the resized case longer than its fired length.

Shoulder might need to be bumped back more.

Screw your die in a little further say 1/2 a turn at a time, and see if it makes a difference with each adjustment.

That did it! Out of about 180 cases, four had this issue and I guess the it needed an extra "bump" in resizing.

Thanks Bigedp, I did a FL resize and measure and they were within 2.015". I got a couple case gauges coming in from Brownells but I guess they would have saved me the minor headache if I had them handy.

May I respectfully suggest you turn that die in no more than 1/8 of a turn at a time.
When the bolt closes easily on the resized case....STOP right there!!
Tighten up your lock ring, and you are good to go.
