30-30 vs 44 magnum for deer

"...compared to a 30-30..." The .44 Mag is in no way comparable to any rifle cartridge. It's no big deal out of a rifle.
"...Knocks them right down..." So does any other suitable rifle cartridge. It's all about shot placement.
Don't be taking a butcher's advice on what rifle to use. He's likely thinking in terms of meat damage.

huh? Maybe he should listen to the guy on the Internet who says "it's not comparable to any rifle cartidge" followed by "It knocks them down same as any other suitable rifle cartridge".....?

How exactly are these #'s "in no way comparable to any rifle cartridge"...or "No big deal out of a rifle"...???

WW...who has shot a moose, 7 or 8 bears and more deer than I can recall hunting almost exclusively with a Marlin or Ruger 44 for the last quarter century ;)

My Mother hunts deer with a .30-30 ... and Cariboo ... and Moose( She hasn't gotten one yet though ... Her BF did kill a few with a .30-30 when he was younger) ...

Am trying to figure out what rifle ill be usingthis year for deer...it will more than likely be a marlin 336Y or a Marlin/Rossi 44 mag (unless a wild Ruger Carbine appears lol)...What's everyones opinion on these two cartridges...I can get a great deal on the 30-30..but from what Ive read a 44 mag will knock a deer on its ass compared to a 30-30...and with the type of hunting im doing (with dogs) that wouldnt be a bad thing.....ANy general knowledge to help me decide would be great

THanks

That right there I should have made note of right off the bat.

Shooting is going to be mostly short range and fast. Either will do nicely. A Ruger carbine would be a great gun for that, I think.

As someone so wisely pointed out, the deer don't read, so they don't know that there is supposed to be a difference.

Anything you miss with is gonna be worse than anything you hit with, in any case.

Look at your hunting style, and your opportunities, for the range you are like to be shooting at, and decide accordingly. I would use either quite happily.

No big surprise there. The 30-30 bullet was going faster, has a smaller diameter. It's a better choice if you want to put a hole through some steel. Doesn't really give us any valid measure to compare the performance on game of the 44 vs 30-30 though.

Wipe your chin, you're drooling again.

I have used a 30-30. very effective on deer.

A guy i hunt with uses a 44 in a Ruger carbine. Shoots factory hollow points. Half go through, half don't. Deer are very dead.

i don't see much real difference in the two calibers. I would prefer the gun that feels best in my hands.

He's right. The fact that the 30/30 punched through 1/4 plate is irrelevant. My .204 will punch through it as well...doesn't mean it's "better" when it comes to shooting bull winkle ;)

Yup. Even The 45/70 won't penetrate steel as well as a .223 but I'd take a 45/70 for moose hunting. It depends if the goal was to put holes in steel or moose. ;)

Sorry if I wasn't surprised about your new found discovery with regards to the steel plate, but no need to be rude. Just pointing out that its not new to some of us.

Seems you decide to bully someone on this site to lather your spit.
Being rude is something you seem to be rather accomplished at.
I just can't wait for you to grab my avatar photo and play with it as
you seem to do with other's divets.
Grab some class, that is if you can find any.

Didn't realize its rude and bullying to make comments about cartridges on a thread about cartridges. I see you make quite a few rude and belittling comments here, maybe you should look at yourself.
