RC K98s at Fishing World... $599

True fact, but last I heard, the Russians wanted like $2500 each for them, and they are all heavily RC'd. Evidently no margin for the importers to turn a profit at that rate.

I've heard this as well. If they were brought over they would be more then a vet bringback.

Shame.

At the current rate of craziness, I believe the RC K98's will be 3 times the price of a 99% vet bring back K98...and the novice collector will suck them up...

Lol, true.

But a lot of new collectors don't have the money for all original, so go the RC route. Also some people like quantity over other aspects.

I like RC rifles but I don't collect them....yet.

I've got to be honest. I absolutely refuse to buy an RC at the current rate they are selling for. If the few I've handled in funstores are any indication of the majority, they are in brutal shape. Yes, yes, I know they've seen the hells of war and aren't getting any easier to find. But when I look at that price tag, I'm instantly thrown off by the fact I can purchase a number of any other milsurp for the price of one.

Not to mention Russian captures are the only firearm I've ever had the urge to bubba. If I bought one, you could be damn sure the gun would be getting stripped and restored.

Well... I wrapped the stock in paper towels and placed in a plastic bag and put inside my hatchback (direct sun)... I'll give it all day tomorrow to "sweat out" the cosmoline:

Just after the metal bath and a wipe down with G96. The typical peened waffenampts(!), but a nice rearsenaled Soviet finish. "ghn" on bolt shroud?

ghn is a subcontractor code. I think they usually show up on bcd rifles.

Despite what some might say, that is a legitimate course of action. Not far different than stripping varnish off a lee enfield to make it look more original.

Some may differ in their views.

Admittedly, I am a complete newbie when it comes to military Mausers, as this is only my second (I also have a mint FN model 30). But, after receiving my RC, thoroughly handling it, and subsequently gaining a whole new respect for it, I believe that it should stay as it is --- a Russian re-work/re-arsenal using German parts that clearly saw action. They really are interesting pieces, and the Russian re-bluing, red shellacing, electropenciling, and the assortment of nicely re-fitted parts (everything is snug and tight and the bolt is smooth), add a whole new element of history.

It's funny, but to me, this is more a Russian gun (with parts made in various German/Czech/Slovak/Belgian/Austrian factories) just like a Chevy is an American automobile (with parts made in China, and perhaps a few made in USA). :)

Now you need to pick up a Mauser variant used by other nations! Like a 8mm in VZ24, Yugo 24/47 or M48, Swedish Mauser short rifle M38 (6.5x55mm), more akin to the K98 in look, function and feel, the Swede M96 (29" barrel), Israeli Mauser in .308 and/or Chilean modelo 1912's made by Steyr rebarelled to .308 or get the original in 7x57mm. My quick list here is by no means exhaustive, though I stuck with ones that are affordable and available locally or online in Canada with relative ease. I hope to see you at Silverdale someday shooting that RC. I usually end up taking my Mausers out every time I go.

I have already shot my Venezuelan Short Rifle (FN model 1930) chambered in 7x57 and it was a pleasure. I certainly intend to shoot my RC soon. Sadly, my club (HAHA) is under renovations (again) and is closed for at least another week :(

I also own a beautiful custom-made Mauser sporter (built on a small-ring FN action) chambered in 7x57, and I used to own an 1888 German Commission rifle, and though not a Mauser, it fired the 8x57 cartridge (Nabs owns that one now, and thankfully, it's bolt wasn't stolen!).

I can see myself picking up another RC. I'll see how this one shoots first.

Very cool. I am not a member though I do like going to Silverdale. Weekdays are better for obvious reasons, as you find yourself being able to relax and you have more room to lay out your rifles on the rack. My first Mauser was my 1901 CG M96 Swede. The 6.5x55mm round is a pleasure to shoot. I then picked up a Yugo M48BO from Marstar for a good price and proceeded to buy a K98 RC as well last fall. My M38 Swede is a recent pick up. I am impressed with my K98. By far my second favourite shooter, bolt lock up is as smooth as butter and it was rebarrel in Suhl after WWII. Exterior pitting that I removed using a home made electrolysis tank though it has an excellent bore. The stock on mine was from a private seller, so no cosmo or shellac to remove, though I gave it 1 good BLO scrub with 0000 steel wool and 2 additional coats of BLO, after that it stopped soaking it up. I think the heaviness of the stock and robust construction help absorb some of the recoil from the 8mm, but I find my K31 Swiss, has by far more noticeable recoil.

I am eager to shoot my RC (plus my new Ruger 10/22 Takedown) .... are you heading to Silverdale this Saturday or Sunday?

Sorry, just saw your post. I am heading up to Peterborough this weekend....so no shooting....(as I hang my head in shame). If I was, you'd see me there with my collection of milsurps...maybe a modern rifle or 2 just so I don't stand out too much. Let me know how it goes!!! I have no doubt that you'll enjoy shooting it. Though it has less recoil than you suspect and is a lot less noisy than other rounds fired at the range!!! ENJOY!!!

Just got a shooter's choice flyer today - wow. $525 RC 98's and $795 S&W Model 629's with 4.2" barrel. Great prices.

cant find them on their web site,525 is not a bad price if you could look at some detailed pics and have a deacent discription of the rifle

NOBODY selling that cheap is offering photos - sadly. Best you might get is a phone description. I only know because they mail me their paper-copy flyer as I've bought stuff there and am in their database (aparently).
