7.62x39

CZ 527 Carbine, nice and compact with a 5 round magazine. I have 2 of them. Only have tried handloads as they're too nice for surplus ammo.
I believe that Norinco makes a bolt (Bushmaster i think??) as well.
cheers

the x39 is a badly maligned round, due to the inaccurate natures of the SKS and the AK47, so I've found there are more bolt actions that are mediocre in nature than better.

that said, the comment about the CZ is on the top. the CZ 527 Carbine in 7.62x39 is probably amongst the best of the rifle. CanAm currently has some in stock at $820.

there's also a Norinco in x39 on the EE for about $350...saw it yesterday I think. there are also rifles in x39 made by Savage in theor 10 action and a Ruger had one in their 77 lineup. these will also be in the $800+ range as well.

Epp's has a couple Zastava M85's in x39 for abour $700. they've been there a while, so if the stock check is accurate, you might be able to get a deal on them.

Seems like someone imported a crate or two of 527's, not only several shops got it in stock at once, but also suddenly topics get created :) A force of consumer interest need a bit of a guiding hand I guess ))))))))))))))

I wish I could get one with a 22" barrel and a stock designed for scope usage.
Build one like I did.

The way I see it, I will have to build one. Most likely a Savage, then put on an aftermarket barrel (.310") and figure out the bolt head and magazine.

I built one on a center feed Stevens 223. The center feed rails can be bent open to work. Get a PPC bolt head from Pacific Tool and Gauge then you will need to put a a 308 extractor blade, ball and spring in it and use the ejector plunger off the 223 bolt face Then find a bbl chamber and thread it and your done.

Get a .308 barrel and a 7.62x39 reamer to fit. Better accuracy and bullet selection.

I'd like this to be a real 7.62x39, not .308x39. I'm aware of the bullet selection advantage to using a .308 barrel. Thanks, though.

Question for you: Since I'm going to be parting and piecing this together (probably from a used rifle), can I purchase a complete .308 rifle and get a PPC bolt head and a .223 ejector plunger?

I was also wanting to go with a detachable box mag, so the Stevens is out for me. I'll need to run it on a Savage platform. I'm assuming you're using your blind .223 mag? Does it feed well?

I think for factory bolt rifles, the CZ 527 is the way to go. I have owned the CZ, Ruger 77, and Zastava, and I thought the CZ was the nicest built, nicest handling, and had the most features. The Ruger was decent, but I didn't like the fact it was built on a longer action. The Zastava was rough - it functioned well enough, but was crude.
The CZ though had the best trigger by far (and a set option as well), good sights, carried and handled the nicest, had fit and finish as good good as the Ruger, and was built on an appropriate sized action. Mine would shoot slightly over an inch with cheap ammo, and a 2.5x Leupold. What I didn't like is that you had to mount an optic ridiculously high to clear the bolt, and it occasionally struggled with the hard primer cups on cheap ammo. Even with that, I probably would buy one again if they offered it in stainless, and with a lightweight synthetic stock.
If I really wanted to do it up right, I would build one up on a stainless Sako 75 action previously chambered for a PPC round, in a Macmillan Edge stock.
I really don't understand my attraction to bolt guns in this cartridge though - I spend way too much time and money setting them up, and thinking how handy they will be. When the time comes to hunt though, I imagine sitting in a blind when some monster 200+ B&C white tail steps out - at 300 yards.
So, I take a real rifle instead.

I have one in 7.62 and in 223.

The 7.62 is fair. better than a SKS but not as good as I would like from a bolt rifle.

The 223 will do 1 MOA with one handload. I have not done a lot of load development with the 7.62, so there is probably room for improvement. Accuracy with milsurp was not good. around 4 MOA. Ammo alone is capable of about 1.5".

How accurate is the Norinco Model JW-103 7.62x39

You will only need the PPC bolt head if you buy a 308, just swap everything off the 308 bolt head to the PPC head. You will not be able to rechamber the 308 savage bbl because there is not enough shank length I dont think. I used a Shilen BBL chambered it, cut a sholder and tossed the bbl nut. You can buy pre-chambered bbls and use the nut if you like no lathe work required.

Mine is a blind mag and it feeds great.

One more thing is the bolt stop (collar behind bolt head) on the 223 rifles is longer than the 308 so the bolt cannot be drawn back as far. Don't think that it would be a problem with the 308 bolt stop but its somthing to look at.

Awesome, thanks Republic!

Question about Pacific Tool and Gauge: Any snags with shipping stuff to Canada that you ran into? Duty/extra taxes/hassles etc?

That sucks about the surplus shooting poorly, how does it do with handloads or commercial ammo?

PS: Sorry I may have missed it, is your Shilen barrel a .308" or .310"? Which twist rate?
And sorry for all the questions, I've been pondering this build for a while. :)
