Hi guys,
Bit of a yarn and a few photos from a hunt on the 15/8/2013

Went out this morning with a mate an had a bloody ripper day.
Unfortunatley we spied a big Stag out around 350-400m and as it was my friends turn for a big Stag he lined up but couldn't get comfy on the slope an a decision was made to not blaze away.

We stalked up along the ridge towards where the deer would be bedding for the Rays.

Along the way had many encounters with Hinds with Calfs and also young spikeys with immature stags of around 24.
memorable moment for this morning was having a spike jump out of his bed, but unsure of what I was, with my mate hidden behind the tree, the Spike began stomping an really getting its neck out of joint as it curiously stepped forward stomping.
The 5 minute affair, ended abruptly when the spike honked an took off.

once we hit the top of the ridge we were kind of blocked in by thick scrub which would of been too loud to attempt to stalk thru an still find deer sunning...

We found a bit of a vantage point an from there we glassed a few animals moving into the sun on the opposite face, hinds an calfs an then the old Shrub getting thrashed caught my attention. It happened to be a poor fella with a malformed set of antlers, missing the tops. We pondered for 10 minutes an I decided to shoot it.

We'l be back there shortly.

Those would be awesome pieces of antler for knife handles.

I'm always blown away by how big a sambar is. That or you're the tiniest bogans I've ever seen! Great job!

HAHAHA!!!

I'm a fairly light framed fella, My mate on the other hand nick name is "Bulky" LOL, The hills bought a case of Jelly legs to him!!

The last photo does show its size, although we are on a slope, an the Camera is sitting on my backpack, so to be fair is proberly looking on a upwards angle Although... They are just as big as an Elk, maybe not quite as tall at the shoulder but only due to shorter legs :) definatley carry the mass.

Too true about the Antlers for Knives...

cheers

Congrats on the successful hunt bud. Love the stories and the pics to go with them. Those deer are pretty massive compared to what I have in my neck of the woods(whitetail) but certainly wouldn't wanna be butchering one of those as my first big game kill. Hoping to take two whitetails this season in order to work my way up to a moose for next year as I've a few up north on my trapline as well as a buddy wanting to get into hunting willing to share a tag.Don't forget to post pics of Bulkys deer when he takes one as well. Thanks for posting and keep em coming.

Yeah mate, I class your whitetails as our Fallow deer, an yep ! there is quite a difference!!
Good luck on your hunts! a Moose would be awesome.
Bulky is keen mate, hes maybe thinking of a 300 magnum since this trip... time for the longer range practise!

Neat pics and cool story. Sounds like you have lots of these "Down Under elk" wandering around. How does it work there for licences to go out and bag these guys? And, how are they in terms of table fare?

Cheers mate, Yeah the Sambar population has exploded, and are borderline on the stage 1 Pest list which would enable 'open slather' so to speak.... The Farm owners have just been allowed to spotlight the deer off their own propertys..

To hunt Sambar in the State Forests of Victoria (s.e corner of aus) You just need the Obv firearms license, but then You just pay for a "Deer permit" which enables you to use a .270+ calibre in any State Forest in Victoria. National Parks are seasonal, although in the warmer months, it opens up ALOT of area. The Alpine National Park. Which is ran off the same "Deer Permit" from the DEPI- Department of Enviroment and Primary Industrys (govmnt).. aka forestry.
Its around $50 a year say.. Unlimited Deer, Aslong as its in the Day light hours, for private property also 'required'.
interestingly for say, Canadians... They now do a International Visitor Permit type thing, for 2 weeks, for a little fee and you are set.

BTW- They eat Fantastic! Lean, and plenty of meat off an animal. like all game, younger animals eat better and also proper prep helps with table taste.
I like to use it in Stews etc, as the meat is a little different to beef, an cooks up rather dry... Proberly like all Venision?

Cheers

Thanks for the info! From what you say, I think the numbers and hunting opportunities for them are something many of us can only dream of here. While nobody wants pests around, I think many of us here are somewhat jealous of the hunting opportunities the sambar provide for you guys over there...wow. As for venison, yes, you are right; it can be fairly dry without the addition of some fat... Peter Hathaway Capstick once wrote that after eating a steady diet of venison, one starts to dream of beef on the grill with dripping globules of fat!
