Accurizing a Savage MKII

I've been looking into ways to accurize my Savage MK2 BV. I took it apart and tried to lighten the trigger - nope, minimum setting from the factory. So I looked it over to see if I had to free float the barrel - nope, already done.

So at this point the only thing I can think of is pillar bedding but I'm not even convinced that'd make a big difference.

Going forward, I think the only thing left is to get some better ammo. I've been firing the winchester 555 36gr cphp's out of it and it's been doing fairly well. Maybe even if I cherry pick the best ones at similar weights I can get better groups.

Any suggestions?

Did you read any of the articles on the accutrigger on RFC or SavageShooters? I redid mine with some replacement/adjusted springs, stoned and polished the components and added the shim and now have a really nice 1.5# trigger with very little to no creep. I also did my own overtravel screw which really helps accuracy IMO. I haven't done anything about the bedding yet and I really don't know if I will. I have the TR stock and it shoots really well right now. Always try lots of different ammo till you find the one your gun likes then buy a ton of it. Also remember that dry fire practice is the very best type of practice, costs nothing and can be done at home.

DEFINITELY need better ammo. My mark II FVSR, puts mini mag RN's in one hole at 25.

Even better than the cci sv's as far as I've tested them.

If you want. I never use one and have dry fired all my guns hundreds if not thousands of times. Never had one break yet and no noticeable signs of wear anywhere either.

I heard the firing pin can do damage to the side of the chamber.

I generally dryfire with my flintlock. The spark is a pretty good distraction to focus on overcoming. I use Missouri flints that are very sparky. It has worked a minor miracle for me.

But I'm thinking I should dryfire some modern guns.

I think you will find that CCI Standard Velocity will work well in your Savage. A rubber butt plate that doesn't slip on your shoulder will help, too.

I've heard that also but have never seen it. Of course if you think it will happen just use a spent case and remember you don't have to cycle the bolt to #### the gun, just lift the handle and lower it, so you don't have to keep wrestling the spent case into the chamber. Dry firing any gun is the very best practice there is so you should do it with all your guns:)

As suggested, before anything else try different ammo. A lot of CGN'ers have had luck with Winchester, but I haven't. You should see a pretty significant improvement with better ammo. I shoot a lot of bulk, and it does work. Once you've slung a few mag-fulls of actual target ammo those groups will shrink. I still shoot LOTS of bulk as I can't afford a constant diet of target ammo.

It has been for me. The difference in my shooting is night and day.

I found the Winchester ammo was so dirty that after not too many rounds through my Ruger new model single 6, the chambers were so dirty that the rounds wouldn't fully seat without significant force, which causes the revolver to jam. But accuracy wise, not too bad. It works fine in most of my guns. But it is a lot more dirty than other ammo.

I'm really liking the CCI Target ammo right now but I am running out and can't find anymore in town. My usual bulk is AE, I like it a lot better than the Winchester.

i started with a stock rifle, fv sr model in .22lr then i got a boyds thumbhole stock to fixe the terrible non existant cheek weld then i got a good scope(hawke 6-24 varmint) this is after a barska classic new guy mistake never again). then i got a rifle basics sav rat trigger adjusted it to 1.25lbs and no overtravel but a little take up not creep. great setup and started feeding it lapua sk plus red box shoots as well as the $3200 custom target rifle beside me on the line at 20 on official smallbore targets. average 98 score the illusive 100 i still cant get maby this winter.

I was out tonight. I did alright but I'm still trying to figure out how to do better. I did notice the barrel seems a bit dirty but I'm reluctant to clean it. I was looking at my rifle today and I THINK the scope is canted a bit. I'm going to have to look into this a bit more.

10 rounds per target at 50 yards. Fly = there was a fly on the target that I fired at.

side note, this is my wife's target. She tells me that she can help me out with my shooting. I think she's fired about 100 rounds so far :p
