2013 M14 Hunting thread

I agree to a point, but even .30-06 on bull Wood Bison is marginal, I've been there. They are one of the few animals you don't get that let down when you figured they'd be bigger- they are bigger than you expect, at twice the size of a bull Elk. And between here in North America, in Africa, and South America I've never seen anything tougher than an amped bull Wood Bison.

They are the size of the biggest African plains game, and tougher, stuff guys like me haul .375 H&H's over there for, and are actually bigger than the deadliest dangerous game, Cape Buffalo. I've hunted both, and my hairiest situation with wildlife and only full charge was with a bull Bison. The other guys in the hunting forum with experience hunting them echo the same. They can be killed with the .308 and a good few have been, but it's a very poor choice for it in my opinion and I take issue with the sweeping "good for anything in North America" label being applied to cartridges under .300 Win Mag. Excluding Bison? Maybe... But on Grizzly I want more rifle too, especially given my .375 H&H weighs the same as my M14's, and is more accurate to boot.

With that, off the soap box for me... Hunting is just the brew and butter for me compared to M14s and targets, and my opinions are even stronger on the hunting side of the fence. :)

Yah, I'll give you that, I wouldn't hunt a buffalo.... Or an elk for that matter, with my m14 ;)
But moose, black bear and all the deer ... That average guy is gonna hunt, no worries.
Certainly not my go to rifle for all applications but always goes on the trips as a back up/camp defense firearm. And on the quad when I'm cruisin the trails ;)
Then there's those days when the .338 magnum is the only rifle for the job at hand. I've got my bases covered , not to worry

Been toying with the idea of hunting moose this year with mine. Generally prefer hunting moose & elk with my bow but am having trouble with my shoulder - the irons on my M14 should provide a reasonably suitable substitution (for the challenge) :) Deer season carry is definitely on the dance card, if I make to rifle season.

OK M14 hunters...how do you roll? A round in the chamber with safety on, or do you rack the op rod when you spot game, risking spooking the game?
Newbie hunters want to know!

Was just thinkin about last years memorable M14 clinic/hunting weekend at my place. I got wayyyy cooler digs these days and a couple spare quads.
We "could" do it again this year but this time we can just cruise right out my backyard and over my bridge to excellent hunting areas.
Late half of oct would work for me if any of you BC guys wanna come out for some clinic and hunting fun :D

Where I live I have lots of time to rack the oprod and load ROCHELLE. If I were hunting in the south on foot ... I'm not sure ... as I think I'd probably rack the oprod quietly and shoot. I've never liked one in the chamber!

The bush where I hunt is thick and shots over 50 is not very common. With this in mind, racking a round upon spotting game is not a very smart plan. I therefore go in hot as soon I venture into the my area of operation (AO).

I'll be taking my M14 out for its second year of deer hunting, though last year it was completely stock. The weight will be a big change, but I made sure to get a good sling for it.
Also I find chambering a round to be too loud to do once I'm at my watch, so I carry it loaded while walking in.

I bought my M305 last june with the EXPRESS purpose of having it as my main hunting rifle for big game.

So hopefully, this fall i'll post back with my success story :)
