yes sir, that's the normal for mosin nagants, have I seen better? yes, have I seen worse? yes.

there are many refinishing threads on mosins for this reason, IMO i'd leave it alone, but clean it up and go shoot, have fun with your new rifle.

Unfortunately one of the hazards of buying sight unseen. ;) Some minor nicks are to be expected but this is extreme and should have been mentioned in the description. Was it?

Grizz

I bought one for $109 that looks minty compared to that. I've also seen ones with cracks, bubbles and flaking shellac, oil soaked wood (bad), ill fitting wood, etc, etc. Roll of the dice :)

Take the stock off and strip it. Leave it in a hot bath overnight and many of those dings will disappear. For the more stubborn ones a wet rag and an iron can work wonders. Then refinish it. The end result can be pleasing if you take your time.

Yep, you roll the dice buying surplus sight unseen. Some look better, some worse. As long as the barrel is OK you should have a good shooter though. The dents and scratches should come out alright if you want to do a quick refinish, couple threads on that here recently.

Remember the gun was likely dragged through the worst fighting of WWII then stripped, put back together with whatever parts weren't broken in the war, slathered in cosmoline and jammed in a crate for 50+ years. Then someone bought it out of storage, trucked it across Europe and tossed it in a boat headed for Canada. Dents and dings are to be expected. Sorry you got one that was a little closer to the rougher end of things.

Mine looks like that. My barrel and action is in mint shape and the gun shoots well with the bayonet on with 150gr ammo. I'm leaving the gun the way it is. More convincing when I tell people it was used in WWII. If I wanted a nicely finished rifle, I would of spent $800 on a CZ 527 Carbine instead.

You guy's are probably right... I still feel like I got shafted do.

I think I'll try that soaking trick and go see my uncle he's preaty good with the refurbishing. I messaged the dealer monday and didn't get a reply that is also disappointing.

If the bore is good you did not get shafted. You only paid $180 ! The cosmetics will not stop it from functioning in any way and mean nothing.

Pretty much this. So long as the actual firearm parts are in good condition, the rest is just the natural result of decades of history. Hell, depending on the date yours was built, some of that could very well be literal battle scars.

At least if you really want a nice, pretty rifle, the wooden bits are the easy ones to fix up.

I was amazed at the dents that dissapear after soaking and steaming, Ive refinished a few rougher stocks over the years and most come out like new. Dents that looked imossible were either totally gone or barely noticeable.

If your bore is good, the rest is gravy. I stripped badly peeling shellac off of one and hit it with several coats of tru oil to bring up the original finish. I was surprised to find a few nice cartouches under the shellac, as well as a repair that I had not previously noticed. Even with leaving the dings it's a good looker now.

It's a war time stock unlike most other that have postwar refurb stocks so it's kind of supposed to look like that. The war time stock have no thumb grove to remover the rear barrel band and that the steel inserts in the sling holes are only on the bottom for the front and the rear hole doesn't have a insert. I think that puts its around 41-43 becaue in 44 they returned to having full steel inserts in the sling holes but I'm not 100% sure though
