When holding a Japanese rifle with a fixed bayonet. Do you ever get the urge to do a bonzai charge straight into oncoming fire? Those rifles sure give off a weird vibe.

Only if I was out of ammo. I prefer to engage my targets at distance to preserve my thus far unperforated backside.

What's the proper technique for sneaking up on a moose with a bayonet? After a few failed attempts, I figured yelling 'Bonzai' wasn't helping, but I still can't get closer than 25 meters.

Bayonets are for wussies, bring on the samarai swords!

Here's that "weird vibe" you're feeling.

It's ATTITUDE, Flying Pig, pure ATTITUDE.

When you are a direct descendant of the Sun Goddess and you KNOW that all other creatures are beneath you....

....and then you throw in a sick 'code' like Bushido......

..... you're in for a WORLD of hurt.

Japan NEEDED to be slapped down, and a lot harder than they were. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were not payment enough.

Don't believe me?

Ask a Chinese.

Or a Hong Kong vet.

BONSAI charges don't cut it, not unless you are charging at them with very tiny hedge clippers.

BANZAI charges, on the other hand, require you to scream "LIFE!!" at th top of your lungs...... and then make sure that nobody else retains theirs.

I have an Arisaka Type 38. Don't like handling it, even though it is an accurate shooter.

I also have 3 Lugers, one of which is a 1938 Russian Capture. Don't like handling that one, either.

Just something about those two.

Is the history of Japanese weapons really any darker than Soviet or Nazi German? Or even the Italian occupation of Libya or the Ottoman genocide of the Armenians. I'm not denying the history, but it seems we can talk about German or Soviet weapons without all the melodrama, but not Japanese.

ANYWAYS, here's some actual Japanese rifles for the Japanese rifle thread. My 1918 Tokyo arsenal T-38, and 33rd series Toyo Kogyo T-99, along with a Kokura T-30 bayonet. Also a T-95 NCO Shin-Gunto, Kokura T-26 revolver and T14 Nambu.

Smellie I definitely do believe you. Anyone who doesn't could spend 10 minutes on Wikipedia, starting with a search for Nanking Massacre and would surely agree. Barbarity, pure and simple.

That being said there is an SMLE on my rack that has been in family possession for going on 60 years that carries that same type of uneasy feeling, like it has carried a part of something horrible. Part of collecting is that those of us who do it for the history, even if that's only part of the reason, are doing our part to never forget what happened.

I wouldn't mind a nice Type 38. Nice collection Nyles!

little bit off topic but having spent all of last summer cataloging the collection of a veteran that was captured at Singapore and the things he went through are just down right brutal.

forced marches through the jungle wearing nothing but a loin cloth (as he traded the issued shorts for food), 3 tiny bowls of rice, only allowed to write 16 words on anything that would be sent home, forced to build bridges, malaria, and various other diseases.

back on topic nice looking rifles and a interesting design.

Some very dark history behind these rifles. Still baffles me how people can be so evil.

Don't know about the dark history, but Jap soldiers outdid all others in fanaticism when it came to combat. ;) One of the reason the Yanks were willing to drop the Bomb on them.

Grizz
