Bloodvein First Nation's moose 'derby' draws criticism

A Manitoba First Nation has attracted controversy — and the attention of the provincial government — for offering cash prizes in a moose hunting "derby."

Organizers of the Bloodvein First Nation moose derby, scheduled for Sept. 27 to Oct. 4, are offering prizes of between $500 and $5,000.

Bloodvein Chief Roland Hamilton says his community has been holding the traditional hunt for years.

While Hamilton said the event was mistakenly advertised as a "derby" this year, he defended the practice of offering financial incentives to attract participants.

"Not everybody hunts, you know. That's why we kind of put this offer to pay them to go out hunting. Not very many people do it anymore," he told CBC News.

"To help out moose hunters that have to go out a long ways, it gets very expensive for them to go out and kill the moose and bring it back to the community," he added.

But Vince Crichton, a wildlife biologist in Manitoba, says he takes issue with the event and the big cash prizes being offered to hunters.

"It concerns me that First Nation peoples who are supposed to be conservationists are going out and offering derbies for, you know, fairly substantial sums of money," he said.

"It's not a traditional hunt. It's a derby where money is being exchanged for the largest animal."

Crichton said Manitoba's moose population is dwindling and more needs to be done to track down how many animals are being harvested each year.

The provincial government says it has ordered officials in Bloodvein to ensure no more than three male moose are harvested.

As well, conservation officials will oversee the event to make sure it conforms to traditional hunting practices.

"Traditional hunting methods" ... So I guess traditionally the natives around here hunted with a 308 and a spot light..... I can wait till the bottom falls out of the endless handout

Anyways, moose Derby are fine I have no problem with that part of it

I don't have a problem with the whole idea of a moose derby, it actually sounds like it could be a good time.

I am sick and tired of the media and people portraying all natives as conservationists ... Sure many Natives are respectful of their kills but this is not 150 years ago! When I see the local seine boats heading out and them bringing back so many fish they let them rot on the ground after everyone who wants some has gotten them. I am not so sure about the conservation measures. On the other hand who cares the band pays their people to go out and provide for the res they do stuff like that.

......but have no way of legally enforcing that if they don't adhere to the "order".

As well, conservation officials will oversee the event to make sure it conforms to traditional hunting practices.

.....which includes no season, no bag limit, no vehicle restrictions and allows for use of artificial lights. So what are they "overseeing"?

My tradition doesn't seem to get the "forgiveness" that others traditions have in this country.

Oh wait never mind.

My tradition is to stay at work during hunting season to help aid the country by paying "my share". Here are some other of my traditions: paying generous income tax, paying for schooling, paying property tax, paying a mortgage , see we all have traditions!

Didn't seem like such a bad idea when it was some hunting association in southern ontario offering a coyote derby........

As much as I'm trying to do my part, the coyote populations in MB. is not on the decline. The moose population however is suffering and a derby like this can not help it in any way.
