Native Moose Derby

The province shut down moose hunting in the zones around where I live and hunt. They can not order them not to shoot more than three bulls but if they do I'm thinking they will say the numbers are too low and shut the area off to ALL hunters. Funny how just across the border from us the Sask gov't is trying to thin down their numbers and we have a ban to try and build up the herd. I really think it has a lot to do with uncontrolled harvest by first nations and Metis harvesters in MB.

And where does the Prize Money come from, I wondersssss...

$100 entry fee.

Prizes:
!st- $5000
2nd-$2000
3rd- $1000
smallest- $500

That's $8500 in payouts. 85 hunters to break even.

85 x an allowable 3 MALE moose. That's 255 MALE moose if they only get 85 hunters entering and everyone connects, which won't happen, so let's say 200 moose for arguments sake, bulls, cows and calves. This is from one tiny reserve. This is supposed to be what Manitoba Conservation considers a sustainable harvest. Keep in mind that hunting is open year round, not just for the moose derby.

And people blame the wolves for the moose decline. What a joke.

My tradition doesn't seem to get the "forgiveness" that others traditions have in this country.

Oh wait never mind.

My tradition is to stay at work during hunting season to help aid the country by paying "my share". Here are some other of my traditions: paying generous income tax, paying for schooling, paying property tax, paying a mortgage , see we all have traditions!

You forgot to add "obtaining and maintaining a firearms license." My ancestors got pushed out of Poland during World War II, where's my handout? I should call up Mr. Putin...

Make no mistake sir, I know where "mine" is. I know this because I've had to work for every bit of it.

I know where mine is too. I bust my ass every day.. people that they think they are the only ones need to give theyre head a shake. But look at this... Im a treaty status indian.. busting my but and paying taxes. I love the typical `Wheres my handout?`comments. Trailer park class comments.

I'm not trying to start an argument here, I've encountered a lot of hard working status natives, but as a white, middle classed male, I am not allowed any exceptions or special treatment whatsoever. This is not the way we will reach equality with our fellow man.

It will never happen. It will never happen in many things outside of the treaty and non treaty issues. Like special treatments for immigrants in Canada. Probably will never see it during my time on earth. But there is so many miss conceptions on treaty status Indians and the rights they have. If a person doesn't know the fact... they should shut it and listen to those that do. Many people will say until they are blue in the face ``oh, if I had treaty status hunting rights, i would never use them.`` And I don't buy that for a minute. Government gives you a gift bag like that, its pretty hard to kick a gift horse like that in the teeth. I have the hunting rights, I buy general tags every year, to feel I have contributed... I have never abused it. And i know... there are many that have, have had, or will abuse it in years to come. But on both sides of the fence... people that need a license abuse the system too, and shoot animals they have no tags for, and get away with it, or have that ``native buddy``. Its not a perfect world, and we don't have enough CO`s to be everywhere. All kinds of races rape the lands resources, but when the Native hunting topics come up, the non educated of the subject , come out of the closet and add they're two cents on what they know nothing about. Gets old.
