Wow! A breath of fresh air.I've tried almost all the presses, and the most useless thing I bought was a kit. If you plan on just one or 2 rifle calibers, you'll be happy. Once you start pumping it out, you may as well have skipped the start up kit garbage and bought what you like. Don't take me wrong, none of its bad stuff, but you way as well get good stuff now and skip spending the extra money later. It's like buying dies. You're going to try a Hornady or Lee or RCBS die.... But you'll eventually get a Redding. So just buy the Redding.
Also from trying the presses, and having owned a Hornady Single stage, a Rockchucker and now a Lee Classic Cast, I would just buy the Lee. 125 bucks through Budget at the top or Cabelas. You get a much bigger opening, and once you load the big stuff, you'll appreciate that (my .338 Lapua was just frustrating to load on the Rockchucker), plus you get a much bigger ram, plus you have the ability to load the big point five oh if you like. Plus the primer catcher is waaaaay better designed, plus the 3 point mounting is more stable. Look at the reviews at Cabelas.ca or lots of other places. Lots of similar sentiment.
I'm not saying the Chucker is a bad press. In fact it's excellent. It's just that someone is now building a better one, with more options for cheaper. Just don't get the Breech Lock Classic Cast, get the plain Classic Cast. 2 different monsters.
"Lock-n-Load bushing conversion kit" ! If I were buying a new SS press, I'd get one that would accept this conversion. Sooner rather than later, new Reloaders begin looking for ways to pick up the pace. This inexpensive conversion will do that for you. Basically your new press should have a threaded reducer bushing in it. This is what you remove in order to thread in the conversion bushing. "Inexpensive & not complicated". I have converted my Redding SS press to the LnL system,,,love it.
If you prime on the press, it is on the downstroke. A primer is loaded into the appropriate cup on the priming lever. It is then rotated into the press ram, lower the resized and de-primed case until the primer seats in the bottom of the primer pocket. Raise it a bit, and the spring loaded lever, pops out. You can now remove the case for charging and set up for the next step, seating.I've been watching youtube vids of both the lee and the RCBS. There's 100x more vids about the lee pro, a little harder to find ones about the classic cast, but it does look pretty good. Can't argue the price... How is the priming operation on the lee?
If you do get the Rockchucker make sure you get the primer feed tubes (if they don't come in a kit). I've had mine for 30 years but only got the primer feed 5 years ago and I wish I had got it right from the start. It just makes that part of reloading much faster. TC
I recently bought the RCBS RC deluxe kit and I have no regrets. It's way cheaper than buying a press and the other accessories seperately even when you pitch the lube pad and whatever. As far as dies go I am most impressed with the Lymann and RCBS dies. I have the Lee 45 ACP die set and it seems cheaper in comparision - it WAS cheaper! I have used the beam scale and the powder measure from the kit to load plenty of pistol rounds and I honestly don't see the need for a digital scale/dispenser any time soon. Reloading is very interesting and enjoyable and I can see that the investment in tools will soon pay for itself.
I would get dies from Sinclair, I have the RCBS powder throw and it works great (reasonably accurate as well). I like balance beam scales since they are inherently more accurate then digital (RCBS 5-0-5 or 10-10).
HI; I would look at Tightgroup for pistol powder. Rockchucker look for a CASE KICKER by RCBS. it has been out of production for years but is worth the 25 dollars to find one at a gun show. The fun is wheeling and dealing ,Haggling at gun shows or at the clubs good deal can be had.
