What kinda bait used for bear?

I've seen them rip apart a cabin for 3 oreos. Seen it after actually.

I walked in my laneway one morning after a scout, came up the front porch of the cottage and something didn't feel right. Looked in the window and there was a black bear eating cookies off a tray on the kitchen table. Honest to God he was sitting with his butt on the chair and his paws on the table. Looked like something out of a kids book. He has pushed in the window screen on a low window and hopped in. I opened the door and yelled at him (ofcourse no camera with me) and he just sat and kept eating. He finished the tray, sniffed around the table and headed back out the window. Funny now but it sure wasn't then.

As for the actual topic, I've used donuts with good results as well. Didn't hurt that I had an aunt that worked at Timmies to toss the day olds in a bucket for me.

Fish guts/beavers/beef scraps to get them coming in to the bait
Oats and fryer oil to keep them around.
We put the meat in a 45 gal drum with one 5" hole drilled in the side. Tie it to a tree with enough strong rope for a bear to roll it around. Then tie another barrel with two 1" holes drilled in it and fill it with a bag of oats and 5 gallons of grease. You'll need some kind of lid to pour oats and grease in through.

Hey
Just wondering what everyone uses for bear bait and how do you go about setting things up?
Would like to hear some ideas that work for everyone and what kinda luck you have catching your bears.
Thanks
Sebaz

What are shooting with? This will determine how far you can be from the stand.
How much money do you want to spend on bait? This will determine what you will use
How often are you going to to bait?
How far do you have to haul your bait?
Fish are messy and stinky..
Dog food costs more but not messy, should use deep fryer grease with it..it's messy.
Oats fairly cheap, add something sweet like Certo etc not messy
Beaver Carcasses are the best, but you either need a lot or just a few. Hang them in the tree so they are harder to get. Or get some castors..
Anise for a spray scent works good as an attractant and cover.
Also make some super stinky make you puke bear juice. Take meat scraps put them in old plastic milk jugs, stick these in the sun for about a week or more depending on the weather. Once they are mostly liquid. Don't dare open the till you get them hung downwind of you. It will make you gag to see the bears lap that stuff up..remember downwind.lol

My buddy saves his bacon grease all year in the freezer. He glops it over old donuts and muffins from a local Timies and also makes a candle using paper towel as a wick. Apparently the burning candle fills the air with bacon scent. He also uses almond extract on old bread with great success. According to him; if the fella doing the baiting is also doing the hunting than the scent of the fella (hunter) during the hunt is no big deal (no need for wind direction or cover up scent) in fact he says the use of cover up scent tips off the bears that something is a foot. Otherwise his smell just means dinner has been served as usual.

Popcorn is great as it's easy to carry. Mix in some jello flavouring or similar if your bears are finicky. However it does seem like th really big bears like protein or at least focus in on it therefore a meat source is important. That being said I had one bait go from rocking to ice cold as soon as the meat in one of the barrels turned rancid. We have always had bears at stands based on that system - and fryer grease all over hells half acre as that gets tracked throughout the busg as they walk around.

And lest anyone forget, bear baiting done right involves a lot of work and time. Shooting the bugger is the easy part. :)

Tried most of stuff mentioned on here when baiting. This fall I hung a chunk of old freezer burnt summer sausage while in the stand for moose. Only took one night for bear to find.
