Hey guys, thought I'd share a quick story from yesterday. I was out for about the 4th time with my Savage FV-SR, outing #2 with the new Accu-riser (not pictured) installed. I mounted a vintage Bushnell Banner 6-18x AO scope on it a few weeks ago and the first outing didn't go as hoped. Ran out of windage. (a first) Corrected that with Millett Angle-Loc rings, then added the cheek riser and did some load testing. Seems it liked CCI SV of the 4 varieties I tried and BOY does that riser make a massive difference to the shooting experience. Anyhow, off a solid rest..it's been pretty easy keeping them in the 1" @ 50 yards ever since with some very impressive groups on top of that. I use those 1" round, adhesive target dots from Bass Pro on a white pc. of cardboard.

So... Yesterday I'm plinking away..shooting the dots, empty shotgun hulls, my usual routine when I see a fly land on the target board. I take aim and it starts moving. I wait for it to stop..it doesn't..so I "lead" it and hit the go button. The scope @ 18x is very clear and I see the bullet hole...AND..what looks like some grey mist on the bottom edge of it. Couldn't believe it. Now, I'd love to credit this as being superb ammo, match-grade rifle, superior shooting skills...but I think it was more luck than anything else. Even a broken clock is right twice a day. :) Only witness was my 12 year old daughter, and she was very impressed. That's good enough for me. :)

Not a great hunting story, not even a great shooting story...but it was fun and I wanted to share. The FV-SR shoots better than I even hoped it would when I bought it.

I think this qualifies as a good hunting story. Could you give me a break down of your setup and price? I m very interested

lol... I knew I shouldn't have mentioned the word "hunting". Should have said "self defense", and post it in the Black Rifle forum. :)

Hey CT~think I posted the specs, but it's a Savage Mark II FV-SR, Millett Angle-Loc steel rings MED. height, and a late '80s (Japan-made) Bushnell Banner 6-18x AO scope...shooting CCI Standard Velocity ammunition @ 50 yards off a bench. These rifles are around $250 +/- new, the scope hasn't been made since the late '80s, the rings were about $35, the Accu-Riser $35 US plus shipping. I have a photo of my daughter shooting it with the riser, the bench and Millett rings. I'll post it later if anyone is interested in seeing it.

lol nice. I had my FV-SR out today looking for squirrels and rabbits...didn't see a single one. Maybe I should start smaller and work my way up.

I sure hope you managed to save the hide. They do make nice slippers. Good shooing by the way.

Thanks HTH. Savage gets it right once in a while I guess. :) The finish is so rough on the barrel that it literally grinds a hole right though a cotton rag when I wipe it down with oil...but I guess the important stuff was done right with this one.

Mine is rough as all hell too. I also had to open up the fore-end of the stock as it was touching down one side of the barrel. I guess if they ever stop shooting nice we can turn them into a nice heavy duty file/crowbar combo.

hes not kidding! barrel has some weird outer coating/texture that actually rusts pretty easy. For the price I'll take theFV-SR, it shoots so good for so cheap... I almost thought they were made in china  'fit and finish' or whatever you want to call it is not even close to my Norinco NP22 9mm pistol or my Chinese SKS (sold my Yugo M59 for a chicom military and got the rifle AND a load of 7.62 ammo, best trade ever!)

I guess they spent too much fluting and treading a .22 barrel that they just ended up spray painting it in their basement... its alright with me its a tack driver for my needs!

Use a small bottle like the one eye glass cleaner comes in, at some warm water and honey, mix well and keep warm.
Put up a plain piece of paper facing the sun, and spray it with your warm mixture.

This is two flies and I had six that day. Your target facing the sun helps. These flies were not bait except for the first one.
