well the last 2 gun auctions I went to have been good, I'm at about 50% on interesting finds

there were a few dogs that followed me home, like the 43 LB that bubba cut the end off the barrel, I was bidding up the competition and got left holding the bag.... oops I just bought that????? $160 well the good thing was that it was the cheapest enfield no4 sporter at that auction, prices were stupid after that.

Then at the next auction prices were a little better, but there were a few that left me scratching my head thinking WTF.... beat up mismatched MP marked No4 went for around $600 and a few of the PH sporters were in the $300-$350 range. Cooey .22RF were crazy, broken stocks and all you were looking at $100 - $200 for a Cooey

There was a No4 maltby 1944 that I saw and thought hey what's not to like full length barrel, bubba only got to the wood.. $90 you can't go wrong... well you can  the barrel is bent, can't tell till you look down the bore, but the bore is beautiful, looks like it was never fired. The auction house has the bolts all zap strapped so you can't play with them, and I never really looked at it so its really my fault, oh well it had some good parts I needed.

what I didn't get but wanted was a winchester made M1 carbine, just went out of my price zone. :(

but the good parts I picked up 2 bubba's that make me happier an MLE Mk II a few months back at the first auction, and just last weekend a LEC Mk I. :)

so I made the mistake of taking them apart yesterday without my camera so sometime this week I will have pictures that will stump my fellow enfield experts, things that I have never seen or heard of, and are not to be found in the Lee Enfield story.

The MLE is wearing a SMLE profile barrel with Canadian markings which is interesting and has the ugliest firing pin I have ever seen, I still have to check but I think its not the correct bolt.

The LEC is nothing special, matching serial numbers (9001) sold out of service marked and a really weird rear sight, it has a 2 part base with a 2 position folding leaf that is not marked for distance but the bases are broad arrow marked.

Did you attend the Switzer auction? I followed that online, did bid on a few items but didn't win anything. Interesting to see some selling prices - how did that non-bubbaed Ross get, more than $1000 I think?

I would expect that it exceeded that. I often go to Switzer's, but went to the range instead on Saturday. The buyer's commission plus tax sure runs up the price. I have bought some good pieces at Switzer's though, over the years. He is getting quality items consigned, along with the odds and ends.

I don't do the big gun auctions, this is a little local auction house, Clyde Auctions, they do the odd gun auction when they get enough stock to make it worth the effort.

mostly hunting rifles and shotguns with mostly bubba'ed milsurp mixed in, grandpa's old guns when he was moved into the home, there is the odd gem.

I remeber when an auction was where you went for low prices. Any auction I have been to in the last decade the prices always exceeded retail. I don't go anymore.
That bent barrel can be straightened if it's not too bad.

so you are the guy that bought that rcmp smle I will have to wear a nutz t shirt next time I go to clyde

Not me, I didn't bid on the RCMP No4, too many things wrong with it. And it was at the pervious auction so whoever bought it 2 auctions back was reselling it at the same auction house taking a big loss.

I plan on going to the next auction in February?? So if your there let me know

I'm from Bancroft (though I'm currently living in Belleville) so I'm well acquainted with Switzer's. I find the worst thing about that auction is not the buyer's commission, but the arses bidding up the prices. You end up paying well over retail for parts basically. I've given up on it. I simply troll the EE and online retailers now.

I've said it before - at gun auctions, the concession serves coffee, fries, and crack cocaine. Some of the abject turds I've seen that sell for sky-high prices are enough to make you question the concept of human intelligence.

Glad you found some "worthies", Woodchopper. :)

lets see if I get the photos working.

The barrel is not correct for this rifle but the barrel appears to be LongBranch production

Barrel with DC proof mark and C^ markings, also the numbers 4 and 2 but not what I would expect for a '42 dated barrel, so just random production marks

View attachment 7547

the sold out of service mark -><- on the receiver and what appears to be a LB mark on the barrel

you will also notice that its wearing the wrong stock, that appears to be an earlier MLE stock with the cutouts for the volley sight and rear handguard.
