Brief Can-am socom 18 review

It's still a Norinco, so good luck. If you're buying one of these expecting perfect, odds are good you're going to be disappointed.

Yeah, I realize that. The fact that I already have 2 very nice Shorties may be setting me up for a fall. OTOH...from the CanadaAmmo email announcing the SOCOM:

This just in, the highly anticipated new to Canada, Dominion Arms Socom 18 M14 .308 Rifle

We've opened 'er up and she's a beauty. Beautifully machined, tight and sighted just right. Almost every member of our staff have grabbed one for themselves and the general statement "best Chinese M14 to date".

No word of lie, these are VERY nice and in limited quantity. Available separately for $499 or in a combo with a 1000 round crate of Norinco 7.62x51 for $849.99, with free shipping on either the price just can't be beat.

Looks good.
Can't wait mine to come in. I think it is my best value firearm purchase with the 1000 rounds combo yet.
Looking forward to pick up the .45 1911 combo soon.

I wonder if you have an issue with your trigger group being set to deep into the stock.Does the trigger group easily lock up when you reinstall it?You could first test it out by shimming the trigger group off the stock and see if it smooths the bolt /hammer drag out. If it does do a simple bedding job on the trigger group would be in order.Just be extremely carefull not to go to far as this will create a very dangerous condition, Re :slam fires.See the stickie M14/M305/M1A Test after assembly for info on how to safely check trigger to stock fit.
Everything on my Socom is great (sights, barrel timing, etc) but working the bolt is harder than all hell. Is this common? I'm hoping it will ease with use.

I think the short position of the FH make the Socom look badass, no so much on the long side, i will locktite mines on the short side... JP.

So that muzzle break serves no practical purpose?

It camouflages the extra length of the barrel in one position and in the other position it should act as a simple break allowing some gas to escape.
In both positions it also protects the threads and the muzzle to a certain degree.

My shortie had this problem. The trigger group was inletted too deep into the stock at the rear. The Chinese high school shop class was on vacation and subbed out the job to a retarded beaver to chew out the recess when my rifle was built. About 1/16" shim corrected operation and after safety checking per the sticky I made it permanent with some JB Weld in the pocket, carefully routed back down to the correct depth. I also polished the inside of the receiver a bit where the top rear of the bolt rides. Don't mess with the hammer.

I guess half the fun is all the things to learn to get them right...which I think is kind of kool anyways...if this wasn't the case, we would be spending $1500. I'm down to pick one of these up as well!

maybe they should at least give a disclaimer "requires $300 in tools to make propper"

now I have a rifle i bought for the sole purpose of having a short looking barrel but my flash hider is pretty much seized on there and i can't switch it around unless i blow a hundred dollars on a vise that i can't mount anywhere in my apartment. and then theres the guy who said his was removable by hand before he even took the rifle out of the bag. I won't even start on the rest of my rifle, these guns are not worth a cent more than $500.

and to top it all off the flash hider isnt even screwed on all the way so that makes it even more ugly

Okay, I got one question for you DA Socom rifle owners....

I need to know if that same high school shop class is STILL reaming out large battle rifle chambers. In 10 years I was hoping that some of them would start drilling them chambers a little more on the shallow side. Anyways, I can always be hopeful. :D

Mail me 3 pcs of fired brass in a smallest padded envelope and I'll email or PM you your chamber sizes/dimensions! It's ongoing research on my part. Most of the Norcs these days are 15 thou above the .308 SAAMI gauge measurement of 1.630". I've been offering this service for over 10 years now. All great learning! :)

Cheers and keep helping them noobs out there!

Barney

Some of us will get bad ones... That life and snit happens, sure talking to Paul, he will take care of the one that are on life support... JP.

I'm sure it shoots just fine, accuracy will probably suck because it has a loose op rod guide and fit/finish are pathetic, except on the handguard, it's tight unlike my other one but who cares about that when half the metal parts are crooked. It just pisses me off that the chinese take such little pride in their work and then they want a raise, but who could really expect a broken subservient people to take pride in their work anyways? It's not like they are reaping the fruits of their efforts.
