Brief Can-am socom 18 review

Barney,

According to RCBS mic the brass I checked was around +9.

Okay, I got one question for you DA Socom rifle owners....

I need to know if that same high school shop class is STILL reaming out large battle rifle chambers. In 10 years I was hoping that some of them would start drilling them chambers a little more on the shallow side. Anyways, I can always be hopeful. :D

The Bad:

- The included front sight is a POS… totally crooked. Replaced with spare GI one.
- It looks like my bolt was over machined on the right lug when they were cutting the bolt roller knob. The bolt roller should be somewhat flush with the side of the right lug… as you can see in the pics, mine is not. (WTF Norinco??? Nobody noticed this on assembly? You can do better, get your head in the game!) On the bright side I have solid lug contact on both sides, and by the looks of it this shouldn’t really affect anything… I guess time will tell.
- My op rod is unusable. The tube part at the front is machined at a very bad upward angle. Once I got the op rod guide mounted straight and solid, the angle of the rod would cause it to jam up at the rear of it’s travel… I replaced with a spare norc one I had and it’s all good.
- I’m pretty sure the splines for the gas system are machined off of center. When I index the barrel so the navy sight is as close to level as I can get it, it appears to me based on other barrel features that the barrel is in fact over-indexed. The feedramp center is way over to the right, and the handguard clip recesses look like they’re cranked a little too far over as well. Took some fiddling but I got it to where I’m happy with it.

<snip>

I also replaced all the pins and springs with GI ones, and added an NM guide rod.

For someone who has none of the spare parts listed above and no m14 specific tools, how much is my $500 rifle going to cost once all of the above has been corrected to make it an actual functioning rifle? $700? $800? $1000? Don't forget to add in all the shipping costs and taxes when buying parts from 4 different places, too. And what price can be placed on a barrel with the splines machined incorrectly? No matter what you do that can never be fixed properly.

I guess half the fun is all the things to learn to get them right...which I think is kind of kool anyways...if this wasn't the case, we would be spending $1500. I'm down to pick one of these up as well!

I really want to love these rifles, but the continuous litany of problems people report keeps me from buying one. The SOCOM looks great, but justifying a host of problems that simply scream poor QC with the fact that it is a $500 rifle is unacceptable to me. My Norc CQ-A has run perfectly since day one with no fvcking around required. If they ever get the M305's to that point I guess that will be the day I buy one. It is really disappointing that they cannot sort out the easy stuff on the 305's when they have turned out some very decent products in the 1911 line, the AR's and the SIG clones.

It just pisses me off that the chinese take such little pride in their work and then they want a raise, but who could really expect a broken subservient people to take pride in their work anyways? It's not like they are reaping the fruits of their efforts.

Yeah, because we have never seen shoddy work performed in North America...

Like a lot of places, some Chinese stuff is good, some ok and some total crap. It is really too bad the 305's seem to land more towards the crap end of the spectrum, some of the other Norc/DA stuff is very good value.

just did some research

the .308 field eject is 1.638
just at the edge
so, you are very lucky... a little bit larger then you can not shoot .308 win

Mark that's how I feel about the M305 too. Now for tinkering they're great but when I buy a brand new rifle I expect it to be useable and not all wonky. I don'twant to roll the dice and have a $500 rifle turn into a $1000 project that's barely worth $450 to sell. I guess starting with a USGI M1 rifle raised my expectations for the platform to the point I don't see these as a worthwhile investment for me. That's not to bash anyone who likes them, I just don't see any real value.

Just got mine today and this is the 6th M-305 I have owned and is the nicest overall.
The only issue I can see is that the op rod guide could use peening to tighten it up .
No shims required and the is barrel indexed correctly .
I only took a fast look at it but I feel CanAm has knocked this one out of the park .

Got mines today, they very well worth the price, compared to older Norc they are a lot more raffined and on all of mines nothing to declared, only had trouble taking the FH, on one i did scaped the finish a bit off it... Bof... Nothing serious... JP.

Make or buy a strap wrench and see if that helps get a little more torque.

You could try some rope or strong cord as well....

I dont understand all these problems that people are having. I bought one of these 10 years ago " regular leangth"and never had to do a thing to it. Did quality go way down?? Whats the deal.

finally got the peice of #### off. don't kow how i'm going to put it back on because i had to use can downs trick but with a coat hanger through the holes. is 100 foot pounds really necessary, i'm never buying a chinese gun ever again, my sanity is worth more than 1500 dollars.

LOL cry a river buddy your posts make you sound like a crybaby . go buy a $2000 springfield then or learn how to use some bloody tools , i doubt you could even change a tire from the sounds of it ..

maybe I live in an apartment and don't want to spend a hundred bucks on a vise for one bloody job?

I got mine off with a $15 pair of vice grips and a old leather glove , yes they are on there tight because thats how they should be so they dont come loose from recoil . try taking a flash hider off a AR15 or the stock screw off a VZ58 .. Not sure why people want to reverse it anyway , just for looks? it makes FH non functional ? i can see a good reason for taking it off completely for hunting to make the rifle shorter and lighter but otherwise i would leave it functional .

well then obviously yours isn't ####ed like mine is then is it? why else would it go 80% of the way on then just get impossible to turn all of a sudden? oh right, because i'm a stupid pussy i forgot.

You might as well reverse it if you want to shorten the overall length. It will protect the threads and the crown of barrel.

Maybe it's cross threaded or there is some debris in the threads.

What does it look like?
