red dot or variable powered sks?

I have tried many different arrangements on my SKS. I tried full length scopes, a short scope, and a Red Dot which is still on there. The main thing I found with the scope mounts is they really vary in quality which shows up in how much they move ! The receiver cover on some guns is quite sloppy. After not being able to keep a good zero on mine with the scopes I ended up with a red dot which is proving adequite, less weight causing things to move. To date I believe I tried four different mounts, but my SKS is just plain sloppy..Other people have manged to scope the gun with no issues so it can be done, just get the best mount you can find and if you run a scope make sure you use a deflector under the scope, or it will take a beating from the brass. You can get away without using the deflector, but it requires moding the reciever.

I use a compact scope, something really crappy and cheap (UTG bugbuster I think) But it works really well I have no complaints. I'm using it with a Choate side mount. I can still use Stripper clips with that setup. I can still used my fixed sights (fiberoptic front sight and aperture sight on the rear. I love that combo,.

No offense, but the last thing I want on my SKS are optics. Clunky, out of place looking, and unreliable in the long term IMO.

One of mine has a simple welded in peep. Keep it simple. Works like a charm.

I have a BC scope base mounted on the rear sight base. About to put a TRS-25 red dot there.

???
Well if you buy the 100$ optics, yes, I agree
If you buy the 1000$ optics, no, I don't agree.
I have 1000$ optics on my cz858 and its a charm to shoot 200 yard gongs with it.
So I can't see why a guy wouldn't put 1000$ bucks optics on his sks, accuracy is the same as a cz858.

If I could actually hit anything at 100 yds with my iron sights I'd be happy to keep my SKS(s)' factory stock!

I just installed a 'Dead Ringer' Red (& green) Dot on an ATI mount yesterday.
ATI gives you an entire new receiver cover c/w rails to replace your factory one. The whole key to its reliability is the care you take when installing it; it needs to be fitted to your specific carbine.
I took my time, filing, fitting, filing, fitting til I got it perfect. It does not move. It's way tighter than the factory cover was.

The sight is fun to play with and it gives me a much better view of the target.
I went out to the range and just dropped it onto the rails and fired a few rounds. It was on the paper
straight away--a good grouping at 3:00, 6" off centre. That's all I had time for, but I'll adjust the reticle more to the right and see if I can't zero it in real good. I'm not hoping for 1 MOA, but I'd be real happy at 3 (especially if it stays put).
I can still use stripper clips, and the brass still gets tossed without hitting anything.

See thru scout scope mount for SKS-might be the best scope mout for SKS

Have just set up a see thru scout scope mount from Brassstacker for my Chinese SKS with TRS-25 red dot. The mount is stable like rock and the red dot sight give you fast target acquisition, usually you can aim and fire in a second, making the SKS to be the funniest plinking toy.
This see thru scout scope mount might be the most innovative and most rigid scope mount for SKS.
• Innovative “Anchor Point” design provides superior mount stability
• See-thru design for continued use of fixed iron sights
• No permanent modification of firearm required*
• Allows for complete field stripping without mount removal*
• Will not interfere with stripper clip use*
• Does not contact stock
• Casing Deflector available for long tube optics

By the way, how come I cannot post attachments? I have some photos for the setup and range test.

Don't be fooled by the website, it shows that only USA consumer can order it. But actually they can ship it to Canada if you call or e-mail to place order. And their sales service is the best I have ever encountered.
