A guy I work with is saying he will give me a older 303. He's cleaning out his gun case . He says it shoot straight and works great.
Just wondering what to expect with this rifle?
What can I compare it to?

If in safe shooting condition it will cleanly harvest all Ontario big game. It will be super reliable in all weather conditions. Ammo can be purchased almost anywhere. It will be ugly and somewhat rough finished but it will work. It will perform about the same as a .308 Winchester with hand loaded 150 grain bullets. Factory 180 grain offerings match the old .30-40 Krag round. Hopefully the magazine comes with it they are getting expensive. I suspect it is no longer in it's original military configuration. Some that were "sportered" were ugly as he-- some were done really well by Parker Hale and Globco. You are getting a very good gun from your co worker.

My friend that rifle is one of the best. It is one of the most rugged rifles for its time. The Canadian Forces still issue it as the weapon of choice to the Canadian Rangers (of which I am a member). They are now trying to replace it and are having a very difficult time. I have seen these rifles abused to a point where you just look at each other and say "what the !#@$?". People have literally cut holes in the ice with their rifle and the things still shoot straight. Here is a good vid I took of my brother shooting steel plates at 400 meters. http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/976997-Fun-at-the-range

Enjoy it and start hand loading for it.

It is a Lee Enfield then? There were a number of arms chambered in 303 in the early part of the 20th century. Odds are it's a sportered SMLE, No 4 or P14 but it would be neat if he handed you a Ross rifle or a Winchester 95 lever action. Have you seen the gun?

My old man has one made in 1918. Over its long and storied life, it has taken out more moose than the Trans Canada Highway. One on hunt it accidentally got knocked out of our boat, and wasn't rescued until we could find diving equipment, about a week or two later. Buried nearly its entire length, muzzle-first in cold Newfoundland lake mud. Took it out, scrubbed it clean, still works like a charm and shoots with frightening accuracy.

After the bombs drop and all this #### goes Chernobyl, the only things left on earth will be radioactive cockroaches, twinkies, and Enfields. ;)

Enjoy it!

Whatever the action is, the 303 Brit is fine for all your Canadian big game, except probably bison and polar bear (yeah, yeah, I know it's been done...). Take care of it and it will take care of you, and don't worry about putting a scratch on it. :)

I have not Sean it yet...
All I have been told is that it shoots accurate. And reliable
Now everyone has me shocked that he's giving it to me Haha!
He is a good guy tho and like I always say !

Pay it forward! :) good things always come back around....

My Lee Enfield shoots the best out of all my rifles, black or otherwise. It was such a pleasure shooting mine last week since I lost the one I restored via divorce many years ago. If you don't want it, please tell your friend I'll be happy to take it off his hands, lol.

The last person who gave me a Lee Enfield also said it shot well, it turned out to be as good as removing the magazine and then throwing the rest of the rifle in the garbage bin or throwing it off into the ocean. Wouldn't touch paper at 100 meters and got 4" groups at 50 meters. Of course, I didn't throw it in the garbage or ocean. I hung it on the wall to let it enjoy its retirement. Hey, it was free and a Lee Enfield is a better art piece than a $1000 scribble on a piece of expensive paper that some #### head famous artist did that my kid could replicate. Even if it turns out to be a ####ty gun, at least you got a piece of art.

Well I finally have it at home.
Has the clip and all
Have not shot it but planning after this -30 weather breaks
I will try and post pictures if I can figure out how to do that but I am wondering does this thing have any value being that old?
And no I am not willing to sell it just to be upfront!
It is my first wooden stock gun everything I own is camo. I was thinking about making it camo but it's also a piece of art on the wall the way it is now...

Yours is very similar to mine. I have a BSA co 1917 no 1 mk III*. I just bought the rifle in August, took it to the range a couple times and then brought it deer hunting a few weeks ago. Although I didn't get to shoot any deer it was very accurate at the range. For a 96 yr old gun it looks and shoots great. Enjoy your new rifle. It's a work horse.
