I've been reading for years posts that praise the wonders of the SKS  Never really gave them much credit as I thought (and still think) that the SKS is as ugly as a fence post, and, I'm not a big fan so semi-autos in general.

I acquired some reloading dies and a scope mount through a "wheel & deal" so I purchased a Norinco SKS figuring that I could "wheel & deal" it as a package on some thing "good". Unfortunately I made the mistake of taking it out to the range and now I not only have to keep it I will probably have to buy a couple more. :bangHead:

I will use this gun for hunting (hopefully for a spring bear as I live near a WLMU that will have a hunt in 2014) so it will have some mods. I have ordered an ATI Monty Carlo stock and intend to remove the bayonet lug.

For me, it is great that I can take it to the range and blaze away in semi-auto with cheap milsup ammo, or work up a good hunting reload and hunt with it as a straight pull bolt action.

I foresee the SKS as my next addiction. :ar15:

I wanted an sks before the m305 + sks deal came along. I was so dazzled by the m305 I made a deal with my wife that I would sell the sks to my brother for 150 to help pay for the m305. I tried them both out with my brother and I immediately regretted that decision. I offered him 180 to buy it back and he said get bent lol. The thing was surprisingly accurate at 100 yards.

SKSs are great little rifles. I paid 160 for my Russian refurb and have no regrets. I've taken two whitetail with it and it's become my go to bush rifle. 1 at 115 yards and the second at 50-60 running. Excellent rifles for the price you pay.

I was thinking of using the SKS for spring bear as well, but was worried about being undergunned. You have any recommendations as to a good hunting reload?

I asked my 11 year old son which range plinker he likes best: my overly-tacticooled Kel-Tec Sub 2000 where I spent double its value in add-ons or, my $250 1950 hardwood refurb SKS. Answer SKS. Enthusiastically. Both are accurate at 50 metres. One is at home. The other is out for repairs.

I simply pull bullets from my Chinese surplus ammo and replace with a Hornady 123 gr. SST bullet. A medium crimp with a Lee FCD and off to the races.

Very slick! I was wondering about finding decent hunting loads, that sounds excellent. I'm about 75% convinced to pick one up for myself, I need to read up a bit on what to look for in a good one. There seems to be so many flavors of them out there.

"...SKS is as ugly as a fence post..." Yep, just like any Warsaw Pact weapon. Made to work, in all conditions, by illiterate conscripts, who were taught to use 'em in as short a time as possible. Looks and accuracy didn't matter.
"...Answer SKS..." Kid knows that Kel-Tecs are junk. Especially when compared to a proven battle carbine.

Personally I like the look and feel of an arsenal SKS, warts and all. I think they have a huge amount of character compared to a shiny factory fresh rifle. They're totally addictive just like any of the commie surplus guns. I still have a couple safe queens internally caked with cosmoline in the safe, gives the collection that special red rifle "smell".

I am not big on that smell, and I have a proven method to completely clean them up... and I prefer the smell of G96 ;)

Try the PRVI softpoint ammo for bears. As with all game animals shot placement trumps cartridge choice all day long. Also the SKS makes a great hunter because you can practice shooting it lots for cheap.

Love the look of the sks, and the svt 40 too, our sons 21 year old girlfriend wants to get into shooting and when she seen the sks she said "that is just ###y" she also said, what woman wouldn't want to carry a handgun in her purse!!! Good catch, hope he keeps her!

I happens to think that a Sks, well at least the Russians I own, tend to be pretty easy on the eyes, so on that point we agree to disagree. As far as adding aftermarket parts to her, do yourself a favor and leave her as she came, you'll only muck things up, and spend money which would be better put towards some ammo. Just trying to help ya out, do some research and find out what mods do to a Sks.
