Does anyone hunt deer under 600 yards anymore?

This seems hard to believe. Especially for someone who hunts a fair amount.

Not saying I've never taken one but I never consider one. If I don't think my first shot is 100% I don't take it. If I'm considering a second shot...........I likely shouldn't take the first one. Considering your next shot is important in billiards but not hunting. That from someone that hunts a fair amount.

Because things don't always go how you think they will. Its part of planning for the unexpected and trying to ensure that I am behaving in the most ethical manner possible. I guess then, that you only have one round in your rifle, since you've never considered a second shot?

Actually I've killed loads of animals with a single shot. Considering a second shot to me means you shouldn't take your first.....if you insist on bringing up ethics :)

Longest for me was 300 yrds on a moose, every other critter I've shot has been under 100.Closest about 20 yrds on a muley that walked right out in front of me while I was hiking.

I've shot deer at ranges from 6 feet to maybe 107 yards. Most times the bush is too thick to see 600 yards. If I lived out west iI'm sure I'd be taking longer shots and using a much different set up than I do now.

My buck this year was around thirty yards, most I have shot are right around that range. Since I set up a long range rifle I think my longest shot has been 150 yards.

For sure it is really terrain dependant. Here's our view when deer hunting. Sometimes you can get close...other times you can't. The closest tress in this picture are about 300 yards away.

Wow! What a landscape! In my case, inexperience with very long range would force me to walk (scent conscious) towards my game. Hopefully land cover would take me to within 200 yards.

That is the second time you mentioned how you would try to get closer. I have hunted fairly open country my entire life. Sometimes you can't get closer. Period. Sure you can pass up a 350 or 400 yard shot because you are not comfortable with that kind of shooting and that is ok, and you should pass it up if that's how you feel. I on the other hand put enough time in on the range and the cutblocks to feel very comfortable in making those shots. So I do.

You made it sound like you never take a second shot. And I said it sounds hard to believe that YOU who hunts a fair amount never takes a second shot. This is because everyone who hunts a great deal will eventually miss or have to take two shots.

My line in the sand is 300 yards. By that I mean that it has to be an awfully cozy shot, or a wounded animal to shoot over 300 yards.

600 yards? Yes, if I notice them that far away, I'll hunt them. I won't shoot at them unless/until I get a lot closer. At 200 I'll start thinking about whether conditions are favourable to try a shot. Within 100, more often that not I will try to shoot.

Not sure how it sounded like that...but you are correct that sometimes a second shot is needed.

Well...

How could you take a second shot if you never even considered one before?

But whatever, misunderstanding.

I meant I've never considered a second shot when taking my first...no biggie...think we are on the same page now.

Thank god I don't have to worry about that 600 yard shot. That would take a great deal of practice both at the shooting and loading bench. If i had the time it sounds like fun. Farthest shot that could be taken where we hunt moose is probably 400 yards, and most likely the farthest that will ever be taken will probably bee about 200.
