Does anyone hunt deer under 600 yards anymore?

I prefer to hunt and shoot deer really close. I like face shots. They just taste better to me that way!

I know the ethics police wont like that answer either so yes, I only shoot deer broadside, under a hundred yards and never through the shoulder. Anything over that and I let them walk away. LOL!

my sentinments exactly

I hunt in a dozen privately owned bush quarters. in many cases you almost never see a shot over 150 yards. Its great for hunting with irons and milsurp rifles. I fill every tag, every year. Its been a while since the last time I made a 300+ yard shot.

I don't have a problem with anyone taking a long range shot IF they practice and are comfortable with their skills and gear. My problem is with the person who buys a rifle with a scope with a long range reticle and sights it in at 100 yards then goes hunting. No practice at all and they figure they are ready for a guest spot on Best of the West.

Same around here

I blame wild tv and there infomercial programming for peoples obsession with long range lead flinging. Anyone with a little money can buy the fancy gear to throw hail mary shots out over 600 yds but I wonder how often animals are assumed to have been missed that actually stagger away with a berger in their guts?

If someone is too lazy to get closer than 600 yds they are probably too lazy to go and look for blood and track an animal that seems like it "just ran away". I guess if they were not too lazy to do that they would have gotten closer to them in the first place and if they had any hunting/tracking skills they wouldn't feel the need to play deer sniper from across a valley.

Too much wild tv, too many video games and too many lazy people imho. Being able to shoot accurately is a worthy skill but is only a very small part of learning how to hunt.

Actually I've killed loads of animals with a single shot. Considering a second shot to me means you shouldn't take your first.....if you insist on bringing up ethics :)

I know exactly what you mean. Forty years of bowhunting has ingrained the concept of "one shot, one kill." Every hunter should have the utmost confidence/conviction that when he/she squeezes the trigger or drops the string "the first time"that the result is a foregone conclusion... If you have the possibility of a second shot floating around in your head then your likely to not be 100% committed to taking care of business on the first shot... I have seen hunters who subscribe to the "fire fast, fire often" philosophy and frankly I am unimpressed with the results.

I will never post at what range I take ANY game at on this forum.

10 yards , you are an elitist snob.

300+ , you are irresponsible , unethical and breaker of some commandment in someone's bible.

come on Kelly, do tell! The 11 to 299 range sounds reasonable, I'd say. Although 200 is max for this old dude.

Ya that's why guys spends countless hours becoming proficient at long ranges....because they are lazy.....lol..

Anybody will hit a beast a 50 metres, i do on purpose on calculated distances to shoot from 600 metres, because on top of the trill of the hunt, you experienced the thrill of top accuracy, 2 pleasures for the price of one... JP.

I'm so lazy that that I can barely drag a half dozen rifles to my range and rotate through them all day. Maybe if I took a nap part way through and had an air stapler I might be able make it? This hunting and shooting year around #### is way too hard, I better put a stop to that as well. Maybe I could just pay someone to do it for me? That would be the easiest.

Ya we are just in the process of lining up a couple mountain hunts for next year but now that you mention it, all that walking and climbing with heavy loads, I get tired just thinking about it. Maybe there is something to be said for just being an internet expert. Way less work than the real world.

I didn't think much of long shots (because I took a few dumb ones back in the day) but then I got board with hunting and shooting and decided to actually LEARN somthing new.

SO I bought one of those "lazer" range finders, good scopes with clicky doodles, built a couple heavy and accurate rifles my self in my own garage, got some "fancy" brass, learned how to anneal, measured some bullet run outs, read a book, learned how to use ballistic programs, built a gong, got a bipod and learned how to actually shoot.....still working on that damed wind thing.

Yep, shees a strange new world now a days. Things change, even in the hunting and shooting world.
For the love of god try to keep up with the times people.

This is a funny subject considering human nature.

When the guys who don't know how to shoot long range hear of guys who do, it must somehow make them feel inadequate so they attack the long range shooters trying to bring them down to their level.

You know, I'm not seeing guys posting stories like... Ya I have this $6,000 rifle and I've won dozens of gold medals in F-Class and I choose to shoot deer at 50 yards. I mean... why would he?

It would be like Tiger Woods playing mini put.

Maybe just grab a pie plate before hunting season, go to the local gravel pit, shoot a few times at 100 yards and call it good.

That's where all the skill is anyways... LOL
