Does anyone hunt deer under 600 yards anymore?

I blame wild tv and there infomercial programming for peoples obsession with long range lead flinging. Anyone with a little money can buy the fancy gear to throw hail mary shots out over 600 yds but I wonder how often animals are assumed to have been missed that actually stagger away with a berger in their guts?

If someone is too lazy to get closer than 600 yds they are probably too lazy to go and look for blood and track an animal that seems like it "just ran away". I guess if they were not too lazy to do that they would have gotten closer to them in the first place and if they had any hunting/tracking skills they wouldn't feel the need to play deer sniper from across a valley.

Too much wild tv, too many video games and too many lazy people imho. Being able to shoot accurately is a worthy skill but is only a very small part of learning how to hunt.

What he said - I agree!

Well, I can shoot out to 600yds if I need to, but, normally my animals are shot at less than 300yds. Animals range from 50yds to this years buck at 360yds. Hard to cross open land. Tried it a couple of times, made it once or twice. But once they notice you, gotta steady up and take the shot. I try not to shoot beyond 400yds anymore. Heavy woods still hunting got me a deer at 10 yds. Busting and chasing them can get you shots of 5yds. Guess I am just lazy, as well.

I'm from the old school. What the hell is a meter? Does one read it? As in hydro meter?

No, a BS meter. On a scale of 1-10 CGN average is about 4 but it depends on the day of the week, phase of the moon, and whether us cranky old pharts have had a recent bowel movement.

It makes the packing out so much easier though.

A friend of mine once arrowed a deer from a tree stand on his property. He waited some time and then tracked his deer about a 1/2 mile where he found it bled out beside a haystack 30 yards from his house. That's about as easy as it gets.

Yes sir. I snuck my 11 year old son to 19 meters from his 4x3 mulie buck this fall. Thought we should practice a sneak as last year he shot his first deer from 190m.
