Need a Reliable and Accurate Semi-Auto Rimfire

The savage 64's, like the mark II's are very accurate.

Ive got a savage 64, its not too bad, just depends on what ammo you feed it, other then that its not bad in accuracy

I adore my 64's! Not sure they, like the Marlins, are great for 6'5" folks....with that kind of budget, a shopping-spree at Boyd's could still be made though. As big a 64 fan as I am, a 795 can be had for less...

For full sized, accurate rifles you should look closer at older rifles. The golden oldies are fantastic.

Honest moment...As much as I love trash-talkin' the 10/22 (and brothers I really do), they are not as terrible (in general) as my personal experiences have led me to believe. Internet is full of "out of the box" suggestions of terrible accuracy, but mine were not "new". Fellow CGN'er Wham-O has posted some seriously good looking groups from bone-stock 10/22's. If I could afford it, I'd go to a shop and buy a few different brand new .22's THEN compare them...

I owned an SR-22 and a 10-22 in the past. The only thing I was impressed with was the magazine. The rifle has great potential but I've been messing with rifles long enough, I just want something accurate and reliable out of the box. I think I'm going to give the Marlin a try. I currently have a Winchester 490 which is pretty similar to the 64. Maybe I should just try and accurize it?

Can't go wrong with a Marlin 795.

If you need reliable and accurate out of the box this might be your ticket. If I ever find the need for another 22 autoloader it's the route I'll likely be going.
I've had good luck with the Remington 597, but others will beg to differ on that one.
Browning or CZ might be worth a look with that budget, unless they aren't tacticool enough for ya.

I don't care what the netty-net says...I've had some great luck with my 597. It's a plain-jane model I purchased here on CGN. Topped it with a Hawke 3-9Endurance [That was destined for an air rifle, but hasn't budged], and it's a semi to be reckoned with. Although not rotary-flush (the "innovation" behind 10/22) w/10rd magazine, it certainly is very low profile. If 25rds are your thing, these features are useless.

Marlin 795. If you want to upgrade to a heavier stock, you could get a Boyd's. Other than crappy iron sights (I scoped mine) and a somewhat heavy trigger, I don't think you can beat the 795 for accuracy/reliability/value. If the length of pull is a problem, you can get slip-on recoil pads that should help things a little. I'm 6'2", and don't find the LOP to be any issue at all. Only thing that would improve the shooting experience with a 795 is a nicer trigger, and I had mine re-worked by a gunsmith. Someone more mechanically inclined could just go the DIY route, lots of tutorials online.

I have 3 Winchester 190's that are actually my most fun guns. The first one I got was so accurate and reliable, I ended up getting 2 more as they came up. Might just have to get a fourth soon. Just. so. completely. addicted. to semi-auto .22's
I have an old Remington 550-1 that shoots .22shorts so well, (I don't even care that that it won't shoot .22lr's that its supposed to shoot. There is a ring in the chamber that I only discovered after buying it. It has a special chamber insert that allows it to cycle .22 shorts. BUT, because short rounds had corrosive priming for a long time, once someone started to shoot shorts in the gun, it left a ring at the beginning of the .22lr portion of the chamber that balloons all the brass. But the short brass misses the ring, and reliably shoots the short stuff quiet as a mouse.
I wish it shot .22lr, but I love having a .22 short semi auto)
Look into those old vintage guns, but beware of the chamber/barrel.
