What do you use to clean carbon residue on S&W 686?

I have had excellent results using ceramic top range cleaner. I find it effectively removes carbon & polishes the finish in one operation.

Fitz polish and a microfiber cloth. Cleans it up in no time.

G96 spray works on my 686 with a brass brush. Spray it on and let sit for about 10 minutes then gently "scrub" with the brass brush and wipe clean with a soft rag.

This is the method I use as well. Except I hose it down with G96 and let it soak for an hour then spray again and gently scrub with the brass brush.

A friend of mine used to place masking tape around that part of the cylinder before shooting that gun! Worked like a charm...

Don't kid yourself the Lead Away cloth is a very mild abrasive but never the less it is an abrasive. My advise is just leave the carbon there, it hurts nothing.

You do what you want with your guns, leave the carbon there is the last thing I'll do on mine; Magic cloth or Lead Away cloth are the best for a stainless gun (not on blued gun)

Just don't use that on a satin/bead-blasted or blued finished gun.

Use Hoppe's #9 and nylon brush for over 30 years. JB Bore cleaner and toothpaste also work.

Must try the eraser trick It's abrasive also, but mild.

I swear by pencil erasers. The white ones seem to work really well, and I always have a few on hand : )
