Brief Can-am socom 18 review

Chalk sums it up perfectly. No difference in QC at all, but for the price still a deal.
Can anybody else recall the hype about vast improvements in QC with the forthcoming DA SoComs ?
I think a lot of people, who wouldn't buy a Norc otherwise, bought the gun based on higher expectations, and are somewhat miffed at the sill poor QC.
I would advise anybody to stay away from the SoComs unless they want a project and instead pick up a shorty from the EE that has already been sorted.
And of course....go for a pre 09 one.
Mine is sorted and I wouldn't swap it for a Springfield and it didn't cost me a fortune, just time and patience.
 
They used to mill the odd sight base on the flash eliminator at an angle .
Good to see they kept up that tradition ..lol .
And someone at the factory actually adjusted the sights on it and shipped it out .

Guess, i am lucky, the 3 Socoms ive got are just perfect in and out and at least one is a shooter with Norc ammo, did no not shoot the 2 others for groups, just operation, it is all good... JP.

Use some Krazy Grease, Princess Auto. It Will make your bolt work better then oil or CLP.

It has Permalon in it. http://www.krazygrease.com/

They even coat the gears of Bell Helocopter Gearboxes on assembly with Permalon. For Military use or anything.

I put it on all 5 ( 2 2007 22',, 2 shorty's , 1 Socum) of my Norks now. You can tell the difference right away with the bolt as compared to CLP.

Put some under the bolt inside the receiver too, My felt way better after I applied this stuff.

I'd say you got lucky to get 3 good ones for sure.
When these first came in CanadaAmmo announced that these were the best guns they had scene to date......obviously they got lucky in their initial inspection because judging on the amount of issues brought forward here on CGN I'd say this is typical Chinese quality control or if anything a bit worse then past shipments.
Marstar has always understood this and that's why they have their iron clad warranty to deal with it.
Canada Ammo will deal with it to but I think their warranty is a bit more limited in that you only have a few weeks or a month to sort out issues.
Sometimes it takes me more then a month to get a new Chinese gun all cleaned up and ready to go shooting to "test" it.

I have 2 shortys. One is under indexed a bit + and the other is just a bit.
The one under indexed So I just put a SEI M14 Coast Guard Brake on it. ( http://www.armtac.com/category/m14m1a-parts/3/)
A bit pricy but works great and scoped it With a Vism 1.1- 4 X 24 30mm Tube P4 Sniper (Canada Ammo)on a M14.ca casm mount
with low HD Burris Rings. Added a M14.ca Fluted Spring Guide and a Dlask Bottom front Rail (39.99) get one if there is any left.

The other Shorty is not bad Just left it stock except for m14.ca Fluted Spring Guide and bottom Front rail by dlask arms.
Both are a bit tight in the stocks But both shoot great out of the box. BUt the under indexed one is my favorite now.

My newest one a socum fit perfect in the stock Cleaned it up and added a m14.ca Fluted spring guide and bottom front Dlask rail too.
(these little rails work on the wood stocks to just keep the old washers after you drill the stock front sling out to shim it if necessary.)
Took it out to the Selkirk range yesterday first time ,-27 below with windchill and 20 rounds of Norinco.
With the iron sites set on 8 clicks hit the 5 " w by 10" long iron plate at 200 yards on the second shot.
3 hits out of 5. (fast fire to) it was cold. Then I noticed another 8x8 plate 15 yard to the right at 200 line and shooting crossways hit another 2 out of 5.
Shooting real fast now (getting colder) I was so excited I missed 4 of the next 5. Went back to the smalled plate and hit another 2 of the last five.
I was not taking my time here was not much light left.
Packed up and went home a very happy camper. Just had ringing ears for a while after from under the tin roof. (forgot my ear protection ?) Had to get out of the house quick before the relatives showed up. 40 min drive north of winnipeg slippery roads.

almost bought another one before they ran out for parts or backup. $450. No brainer. ( no cash left.)

These rifle's are " the big stick" SemiAuto 7.62X51 can't beat what you get for the price.

and once you learn about them by having one and there knaks you can fix most of the small stuff.

Its like a hot car you are just not going to turn the key and drive. Everything that you need to do
to get it to work right will just bond you to them.

If that is 50 yards with an optic you need to get to a clinic asap.

Yes at 50 yards here at the same place, same ammo but with my SA NM M1A, the rifle is different, the shooter is the same, we are not talking the same tolerances in those rifles... JP.

The hardest part of sorting out the index is getting that poxy little set screw out from the receiver.
After that its literally a 2 minute job with a big ass wrench and a SOLID vice. Most are only out by a gnats bollock.
Theres a great sticky about it, step by step with pics.

It is not essential to remove the set screw for a minor index adjustment. Neither of my rifles had the set screw removed prior to adjusting the index

Where is this sticky, I cant seem to find it.
 
To index a barrel two straight edges are attached to the rifle as shown below.
One on the flat space on the heel of the receiver and one on a (straight) flashhider base.


The receiver and barrel are wrapped in masking tape and a wrench is used to turn the receiver while the barrel vice holds the barrel in place.
You don't have to remove that screw in the side of the receiver for minor adjustments.
The receiver is tightened onto the barrel more for an under indexed barrel and backed out for an over indexed barrel.
Look from both ends of the rifle till both straight edges are perfectly inline with each other.

Carefull not to damage pin on bottom of receiver (mag hold open device).In this pic I pulled down on the wrench to tighten the receiver onto the barrel as mine was under indexed. (Thanks again Barney )

Question - Does correcting the indexing change the headspace? If a barrel is over-indexed and you loosen it, does this also cause an expansion in headspace?

Moving the barrel in or out of the receiver will change the headspace..... A small amount.
I guess if your headspace is borderline and you back the barrel out a bit it might be an issue.... It sure wont help.
