MDT TAC21 Chassis for Savage

Some modification is needed to fit to an older Stevens action with 4.275 spacing.
The trigger weight tension screw on the trigger frame and roll pin on the trigger do not clear.
The trigger wire spring roll pin that sticks out the side of the trigger can be squeezed in the trigger a bit more to clear. ONLY if the trigger tension wire is angled so that is touches the trigger.
The chassis needs to be milled to allow trigger tension screw clearance. I plunged an endmill at the contact mark and was done in a few seconds. I suppose it could be done at home, not much material to remove.
The recoil lug was too long and had to be machined, I took .040" off the bottom and had lots of clearance.
The 4.275 spec is tight, rear hole can be enlarged slightly to accommodate for you guys with drill bits.
The alterations cannot be seen from the outside when assembled. Actually, if you flip the rifle upside down and on the right angle you can see the trigger tension screw mod.
The sear pin [largest pin, holds the trigger assembly to the action] head has a lot of free play during assembly and may not align perfectly centered in the hole in the chassis so be careful. You can reduce the head diameter if you like, but not needed.
I got an Ergo grip, Magpul PRS stock and tube with the order due to good prices and this build was out the door.

Good news is that it can be done at home and better news is that Laszlo can revise the chassis easily. If MDT wants pics or info you'll have to send me another chassis, this one was gone shortly after assembly and I didn't get to take any pics.

Cheers,
Rob

Thank you very for this feedback Rob.

I like the look of the LSS model for the savage, although with some minor fitting for my trigger guard bolt release. I think I found my next stock for my rifle. The only change I would make would be a bolt on bottom fore arm rail instead of forward sling stud, and the addition of reversable (L or R) QD sockets front and back.

But thats just me .. ;) :p

The fore end has mounting holes for a rail already. We manufacture the rails as well.
We will soon also have a bracket to allow you to mount night vision.

My .223 Savage Hog Hunter in its new TAC-21 Chassis :)

This is exactly what I would love to do... Getting a hog savage into the LSS version though. For me would be a different telescopic stock too.

Beautiful build by the way, is that a flash or a comp on there? Which one is it?

Slaymoar,
Thanks. I did consider getting the LSS chassis and leaving the iron sights on, I may still do that. I have enough spare AR parts to complete an LSS chassis.
It has a Daniel Defense flash hider.

Cheers.

Savage 10 FCPK. Lost the ability to remove the bolt, and Had to file down a bit of metal off the bolt release arm to make it fit. Beside that it looks and function awesome. Also I run a rifle basix trigger for all the obvious reasons...

Comes in a 15.02 LBS with ADM mount, scope, mag and Atlas bipod or 11.6 LBS naked.

I received an email today from Maarten at MDT, he says they are working on model of the tac21 for trigger guard bolt releases. He says by late January they may have something that works! So I'll be holding off until we get more news.

DILLIGAF, that's a sweet looking set up. Good work getting it to fit!

Any word on the long action version? I seem to remember something about a January release date? My Sav 111 long range hunter in 338 Lap needs a nicer stock still :D

We prototyped the LSS for Savage first, which is going into production soon. The TAC21 for Savage LA turns out to be a bit more complicated and is pending further review. Will post updated once we know how we will proceed!

I have some spare cash I feel like spending. I live in Toronto and am considering burning it for heat but, if the TAC21 with Savage bottom bolt release inlets becomes available before the power comes back on, I will buy that instead and just be cold.

I sure hope you guys are on schedule for a January release :)

If they do come out with a TAC21 for the savage bottom release, there will be a cheap Tac21 chassis for sale on EE... lol...
