Absolutely ignorant

I agree that courtesy goes a long way. If I where you I would get in there early and let these guys push the deer past you.

Well it's hard to get upset over ignorance.
You said they were ignorant, so that means you believe they had a lack of knowledge and were uninformed.

If you think their actions were calculated, and that they were intentionally impeding on you, then you may want to change your thread title.

Ignorant of proper hunting etiquette?

Yup, that works. As long as you believe they simply had no clue. But chances are, with that many "track piggy backers" like you encountered, one or a few of them knew exactly what they were doing was taboo.

When fishing on a lake you wouldn't pull your boat up right beside someone else's and drop a line. Potentially tangling lines and messing up their trying to fish. So why would you follow foot steps and potentially mess up someone's hunt. Regardless if it's private property or not. I guess I just don't understand, probably because I'm not a douchebag haha
And as for ignorance
Real world definition - someone doing something stupid for lack of information or knowledge to tell them otherwise
Redneck small town definition - acting like a cockface

I get what the OP is saying and I feel his pain. Respect is lost in alot of people. If I went to a spot and found someone else there either by parked vehicle or fresh footprints in newly fallen snow.. I would go somewhere else and kick myself for not getting there earlier. If I made fresh tracks and found someone directly behind me I would also get upset.

Best thing to do OP is just have several spots in mind and hope no one else goes there when your there on public land. Just like a fight thats about to take place... a better man would walk way and try to avoid confruntation.

Move to the Yukon, you can literally hunt for days maybe even weeks without so much as seeing another human track let alone them that would have made 'em. We have the largest moose in the world, the greatest number of caribou in the north (okay that's a bit of a stretch, but we have lots), bison running around like rabbits, the prettyist sheep in the world and gobs of 'em, stone and dall, mountain goats that have never seen a man (except me if they are really old), mule deer and elk on draw and more black bears than the prairies got geese. You can shoot a grizzly every 3 years, and there's one behind every 10th tree. Our lakes are so full of lakers that you can just shovel 'em out, no need for all that fancy rod and reel stuff (and the shovel is going to get a lot of use in the winter too so it's a great investment and much cheaper than a rod). You can ATV, snowmobile, argo anywhere your heart desires with out designated trails and speed limits. We have ptarmigan in flocks that blot out the sun for 3 seconds at a time, 10 spruce grouse in every tree and enough ruffed grouse to feed the Nepalese army. I think there's only 2 months of the year that you can't legally hunt SOMETHING, and that's when shovelling, er I mean fishing, the lakes is in full swing. Wages are the highest in NA and the cost of living is next to nothing (okay that's a downright lie) and the jobs are every where (that's not).
The point is if you don't like your situation change it, I did 35 years ago when I moved here and it's been fantastic to me. Did I mention I have a Ferrari and an airplane?
OP you are obviously a young man, do what I did and follow the good hunting.........................

Doug,

why are you telling our secrets here .....

a shame some urbanites just made some changes on the ATV everywhere it will be soon something from the past .... but everything is right ....

today that is true you need to shovel a lot before ice fishing ....

Exactly.. not worth the drama.. but would be nice if respect was more evident

"Go west young man". Seriously though, as you are on Crown land this is more reason to go farther and deeper than the crowds. Suggest you search for land owners that will give you permission.
Cheers

I usually fish away from the crowds, but the lake is so heavily fished in winter that it seems like your in the middle of a city somedays.

I understand your frustration, but as others have stated crown land is public for all who wish to venture. If you want private "buy it" and as much as you can afford, or exclusive lease rights. May sound snobbish, but it is not meant to be. It is the only way to get what you want.

Here's a twist on being first in an area, this has happened more than once, you arrive at an area before legal light and buddy is just coming out of said area, that's the guys that really get me It got so bad in the zone we used to hunt in that you'd go into town in the evening and on the way back you'd see headlights in every second field. Needless to say, we don't hunt there anymore.

Maybe a sign at the trail head stating that the follower might get shot if they come down the trail. They were trying to screw up your hunt, maybe even get you too look for another area to hunt. Put something on the trail going in to let the follower know your there.

It is illegal to interfere with a hunt. cell phone record this idiot and his conversation. Hunt where you have permission. Its gonna come down to written permission soon, i can see it coming.

Been there, Had permission from land owner to hunt an area , scouted out the spots found two hunters in permanent tree stands on his property, Gave a wide berth and hunted elsewhere that day, informed land owner of situation at end of day,. Next time out stands were removed and in his barn, never seen anybody there again,I still have permission to hunt there, He was thankful that I had informed him of the unwanted persons on his property, If all else fails he has the right to stop anybody from being on his land . It was not my place to confront them it was his.he has the legal right but I do not. Even with his his permission I still stop and ask before going in. It does work sometimes.
