12 Guage vs 20 Guage for Cowboy action

Yes, I traded my Norinco hammered gun for a Wyatt Earp a couple of years ago. They are sweet, but I sometimes miss the tough business like feel of the Norinco and it's ability to handle 3" SSG

So who has a cheap "cowboy action" .357 rifle and 12ga shotgun on sale right now? Just picked up a pair of revolvers so need to complete the ensemble. Disappointed to hear 20 ga not being recommended as I was hoping to go 20 ga but if 12 ga is what is best, then so be it.

Pietta .357 cal 5 1/2 bbl from Marstar. Pretty good deal from what I have ascertained from surfing reviews online. I'm not looking for anything super fancy, just want to get involved this coming year.

Here 's a good deal on a new rifle.Try this site. That is exactly the rifle I started with. A little work and it was a great rifle. I sold it after I went to a Uberti 66.
If you decide to get it go to Nate Kiowa Jones site and get his DVD or find a good cowboy gunsmith to slick it up. You'll be happy you did.
Epps has some IGAs hammerless Coachguns for $503. Again it's what I started with and it serve me well for a couple years. Very easy to sell when you decide to upgrade.
Best of luck. In the meantime visit our website http://www.doublebcowboys.com/ you might find some interesting stuff.:)

How do you like your pietta millenium?

I haven't even received them yet, still being "processed". I've had a Ruger .22/.22mag new model for many years and a single holster but cowboy action appears to require two heavier revolvers so I went for a lower cost option with the Pietta's. I'm not really into the competitive aspect, just the fun. I have a .444 Marlin but that doesn't appear to cut it so might get a 1894C.

Did you buy the pistols online? I tried to get a pair right now, but I dont know how to pick the length I want.

btw, theres a henry 357 lever for sale on the EE

Yes, bought on-line from Marstar. My Ruger is 5 1/2 so I'm used to that length and I think 4 3/4 is too short and 7 1/2 is too long so 5 1/2 is just right (Goldilocks, lol).

BTW, these Pietta's do not have the transfer bar that my Ruger has, so only good to load 5 rounds with hammer down on empty chamber. Purists like that but frankly I like the transfer bar conceptually. Some say the transfer bar can cause light primer strikes but who knows.

I gave the EE a quick skim but too $$$ for me I think on that Henry.

I'm only 1/2 hour due East from your neck of the woods.

how did you pick barrel length? It just says add to cart.....

While the Henry's are well made rifles, they were not built for the speed that most Cowboy Action shooters want to shoot their rifles at. Plus if you on a stage where you have to "load on the clock" you are at a distinct disadvantage. The majority of people I see that start with a Henry, sell it and buy something else by the time they have shot their 6th match. Buy a Uberti M73, they cost a bit more money but they can be made to run very fast. If that doesn't work for you try a Marlin M1894, also very reliable. If you decide to go with a Winchester M92 or clone, remember they are very sensitive to cartridge overall length.
