How to keep hunters away?

You shouldn't have to own the land to be able to hunt on it and that's the beauty of crown land. No one said anything about the whole world. If some coupe of random guys were hunting on my land, I wouldn't get pissy, pop the tires on their cars, and tell them to leave. That will lead to nothing good and with proper negotiation, something can be worked out. Sure it would of been ideal if they had asked you to hunt on your land but perhaps they didn't know if belonged to you but now they know and they would know you're not a crabby sauerkraut to deal with if you take a positive approach. At least most of the land here that is owned by natives are pretty cool about letting people hunt on the land without permission and that is the kind of good #### I'm talking about. Many will even give you good tips on where to find the nice game.

you get guys that plain and simple don't give a rat's a** and will pull into your driveway get out and go into the brush I've seen it before. if it were my property and they did that under arrest they will be for trespassing. you get idiots everywhere people park were there is clearly a driveway with a big red jeep parked in it because they are too busy on their phone to notice lets say those wheel dolly's Canadian tire sells come in handy. but then again this is Canada the second largest country in the world with a good majority of its land mass being owned by the government

Just out of curiosity, for all those saying they 'will arrest anyone found trespassing', how do you plan on doing that?

citizens arrest you basically hold them till police can get there. I can see where it could get sketchy though considering one or both parties could have guns but id rather need to disarm at gun at close range the a knife

It comes down to ignorance. Some hunters just don't give a sh#t and give all hunters a bad name. And then we wonder why people jump on the anti gun/ anti hunter wagon. I have a friend who was having constant issue's with a "lawyer" hunting his property after being told several times not to. Last fall my buddy heard shots going off in behind his house and when he went out to investigate and there was buddy boy shooting on his land. My buddy who never gets too upset loses his mind on this guy and basically tells him get off his land or he will call the OPP. This trespassing donkey pulls out his phone and calls himself saying he was threatened by my buddy! OPP shows up, tells buddy to beat and caution him for trespassing.
It just goes to show you can't stop ignorance. Some people just don't get it and it ruins it for the rest of us!

I am fully aware of what a citizens arrest is, but how do you plan to detain them for police? Do you have training in how to control a non-compliant subject, most people arent going to allow a non LEO place them under arrest.

Cameras are the best bet...Pictures of license plate numbers, and faces..

if it were my property and they did that under arrest they will be for trespassing.

You try to physically detain someone for trespass, you just might find yourself with charges filed... Probably a worse charge than the one you are holding...

I think im good no need to physically arrest/detain someone unless they put up a fight/run and then well other training is needed for me that's systema

Sounds nice but not likely going to work out well. I can tell you that if someone other than the police or a game warden tryes to "hold" me things would escalate very quickly.

Call me crazy but,
I was raised that hunting was FIRST about respect. Respect for nature and fellow man/woman. Just figured asking permission would be part of that.
They certainly are not out there cutting dead fall, clearing trails, cutting/working the feed plots, filling the feeders, etc.

I pro hunter. Not an elitist. I would have allowed them to hunt there for sure. But I just also need some notice.

Super hero fantasies about detaining trespassers who have guns and making citizens arrests should be left to the Internet.

Take down info. 911 call. I've done it and will do it again if required. Also, I don't say "trespassing hunters." I report armed men on my property waving guns around. Usually brings a prompt response.

Call authorities don't try to arrest yourself when there is no other witnesses. My good friend here in BC was always going after everyone who went on his 300 acre or so farm. 90% guys apologized and left but one time from what I gathered he tried to physically stop the guy and hold him till RCMP shows up. To put it short he ended up with 5 broken ribs, and cracked scull from his own satellite phone being smashed on his head. RCMP showed up all ended up in court. Guy was charged with transspassing but all assault charges were dropped no witnesses. Guy said he was defending himself. He did not even have to pay a fine, his lawyer dug up enough dirt on my friend to picture him as very aggressive and confrontational individual prying on accidental transpassers

Put up signs that say no trespassing, trespasser will be prosecuted. Make sure they are obvious and no one can claim "owe, sorry, I didn't see the signs". You own the land and it's your right to pick and choose who hunts on it. Nothing pisses me off more that locals thinking because they grew up in the area, can hunt wherever the want. I worked for 30 years to buy my piece of paradise and anyone I catch trespassing won't get my good side.

I miss the old days here in Alberta. We used to have a Use Respect program here. Land owners would post their land with a sign. They were 3 different ones, one for no access ,one for free access and one for access with permission with the land owners contact info on it. Sometimes I still run into one.

Based on what you posted, your buddy got what he deserved.

Unless you have witnesses, assistance and the proper training on how to deal with non-compliant subjects, including the proper use of mechanical restraints, making an arrest is best left for the authorities, especially for something as minor (in comparison to other arrestable offenses) as trespassing.

Yep, I fully understand you here. Its always ideal to know what is happening before hand. If I saw someone using my land and where being responsible hunters, Id simply let them know that this is my property you're using, I'm ok with you using my land for your hunting trip but please let me know if you plan to use my land again in the future. Some people on this thread wouldn't believe the positive reaction you would get out of someone. The next year these guys call you to let you know they want to use your land again for hunting season and now these guys hunting on your land have become an extra set of eyes and ears for if anyone else is hunting or polluting your land.

That's exactly how I would have it.
