RobArms XCR-M first impressions and initial range report

Another range report;
I stopped in at the gravel pit on the way home to test some loads with berger 168g and Viti powder , I could only get out to 125yds ( the berger 168 vld's don't shoot as tite as the hornady 165g but they are meant for long range ). all groups shot with the gas valve set on #3. shot off the tail gate at -30* there may be some driving error but looks like 1 nice node.

Nice! Optic used if any?
I'm looking forward to a bipod and some magnification... I really should just get an adapter and throw the harris on but for some reason I want a gg&g or an atlas.
I'm really going back and forth on how much zoom I want...
How many rounds on 3 have you put thru? After how many rounds did you put it down to 3?

XCR-M with 20" heavy barrel, Nikon monarch 3-12 BDC in a burris p.e.p.r. quick detach, The BDC matches the 308 on 12 power so you can go out to 500yds on the marks without guessing . Caldwell 6-9" pod holds the front end up. 200+ rounds down the tube, I set it on #3 after 20 rounds and that's where it's stayin, this is where it shoots best and I agree with Can Can that #3 won't do any damage.

Is that a robinson 20", or did you rebarrel it ?

I had an XCR-L in 223, but I sold it due to having/wanting more rifles in that caliber. I think I might have to get an M though as there isn't many great options in NR 308 rifles apart from the M305 which I own already. The XCR is a really good platform as long as you aren't expecting 1 MOA, it's kind of funny how everyone complains about the XCR's accuracy when it really is no worse then any other comparable NR rifle. Seems like the XCR takes the blunt of everyone's complaints due to early issues that no longer exist.

Well here's the problem, it still has an inherent design flaw. Don't get me wrong I actually like a lot about the XCR-M and almost bought one myself. Love the ergos, trigger seemed good, monolithic upper free floated barrel, etc. I really wanted one. But the barrel retention system is Mickey Mouse at best. The lack of match barrels for a quick change system also says something. It says the rifle wasn't designed for accuracy.

So now we have a NR battle rifle accurate system. The RFB has similar acuracy design limitations. Although it's not the result of a weak link in the RFB. Plus the RFB is significantly smaller/shorter. So it offers an exceptional advantage in small form factor. This puts the XCR-M in an ackward place. Nowhere near as accurate as an AR10, not as small as RFB and a lot more expensive than Norinco. Plus the 542 Famae is due to arrive and is a proven military design.

NTM has posted a lot of good info. What I suspected he confirmed. Worth looking up his XCR-M review.

The XCR-M has a lot going for it but it could use a redesign for the barrel.

Thanks for the write up guys. I have money burning in my pocket and can't decide on xcr-m, Tavor, Swiss arms or ACR, I guess there is no replacement for displacement! :)

If you are looking at a semi-auto in .308 there is no question the Norinco M-305 is the best bang for the buck going.
It will easily shoot with (and probably out-shoot) the XCR-M.

Well mine will shoot an inch and a half, can your norc consistantly outshoot it? ( I own an accurized norc as well.) Cause even though I'm an old fart, I'll be more than happy to have you come on up and prove your point.

Just shot my xcrm yesterday, and boy do I love the trigger. And it shot indoor so I can't brag about sub-moa. But it just handled beautifully, and my goodness it's loud. I adjusted the gas setting but couldn't go down more than two settings from the max.
Tomorrow I'll try my m1a (Springfield) and compare. Fwiw I love my tavor too but it's a very different tool.

Sub moa isn't in the realm of a piston gun like the XCR, from what I've seen, at this point, given my loads. my 6.8 is now a solid 1 moa gun after doing the crown. The .223 is around an inch and and a half. I've seen some internet chatter about sub moa m's. but I'll need to get the load data and try it myself to believe it. just the same, I'll take an inch and a half at a 100 yd any day of the week for a semi I can hunt with. Hell I know a bunch of guys that can't get that with their bolt guns and they're prolific killers.

Maybe not out-shoot it (assuming your 1 1/2" groups are measured from 100 yds/m and contain ten rounds) but I would hazard an educated guess a similarly equipped M-305 with compatible ammunition would shoot as well as your XCR-M.
How does your M-305 compare to the XCR?

5. My only complaint is that the safety digs into my hand a little bit, but this could be attributed to the wimpy grip allowing my hand to climb too far upwards(see #4).

I had the safety issue also, it is easily cured, just remove the safety on the ejecting side and replace it with a washer.
