Wolf Hunting Rifle/Cal.

HOLY COW whats the next thing you guys are going to waaaaaay off topic about.

Next time take it to PM so the rest of the forum does'nt have to read threw all that garbage

It really didn't need to go past post #2.

On the other hand, these things are to be expected on a public forum. If the OP wasn't interested in a debate, he could have typed the topic into google and gotten a few days worth of reading. :D

Hoytcannon actually brought the 410 into the discussion.... That being said, my son's remington 870 in .410 scoped with cantilevered rifled barrel and 3" sabots will punch a 3" group at 100.... How many SKS's can actually punch a regular 3" group at 100 yards since you brought up that number?

A number of years ago I tried some handloads in an SKS. The result was a 10 shot, 6 inch group at 200 yards.

That's certainly accurate enough to kill a wolf, and the 7.62x39 is more than capable. Neither SKS or 7.62x39 would be my first choice, but I'd take it over a .410 slug any day.

Dang... Do I ever regret trolling with the .410 and slugs... Can't believe that is still in the convo... Not generally given to fishing here, but hooked a big un'...

Not suggesting either.. just trying to counter the usual sks crowd that chimes in each time there is a caliber discussion.... sks is not a hunting rifle.... people need to get over that illusion....

Pretty common for SKS rifles to be used for hunting these days. I've probably seen more SKS in the field than SMLE's in the last couple of years.

All well and good... would be happy to see someone who actually harvested a wolf with an sks...lots of talk here.... I can 0ost pics of mine with 270 .... anyone else have true harvest experience or is the sks crowd tslking out its ass again?

Using a SKS on a wolf or any other animal would require similar restraints as using a 30-30 win for the same purpose...in reality how many wolves across canada do you think have been taken with the 30-30 in the past 100 years?

IMHO, I think in the present time and for the last + half century we are caught up in the printed BS ramblings of the so called experts (mag. writer/story telling/advertising selling/literary experts) as to what is needed to humanely harvest said game....most of it is without a doubt nothing more than biased bull shyt of one mans opinion.

Its been my experience over the last 45+ years of hunting game animals in Western Canada that they are NOT hard to kill....but thats just my personal observation and it certainly doesn't make as great of a story.

Its all good, instead of arguing which is best, participate and enjoy! :)

No wolf but as I mentioned above, I shot a yote with an SKS. It died.

I imagine hundreds of wolves have been killed with SKS rifles in Russia and those funny countries over there.

More than likely because they had nothing else to use... You gotta "dance with who ya' brung."

Now if only OP had asked "What calibers have killed wolves in th epast and what can I use if I reastrict myself to under 150 yards" instead of asking what is a good caliber for wolf hunting....

True enough BUT it certainly appears the thread got derailed to a SKS capability arguement on the last few pages!

Every SKS I have ever owned was more then capable of doing much better then what your suggesting.

I have read that the Soviet weapon techs sighted the rifles in at 2 and 3 MOA at 100 meters bayonet extended. Anything grouping larger then that was sent back to the workshop for repair.

From what I have seen the SKS crazy groupings are often the result of...
Bayonet not extended.
Surplus ammo used.
Wobbly receiver cover scope mount used.
Shooter not experienced with the rifle or the cartridge.

Personally my current all around cartridge of choice is the .243 with TSX. But I know the SKS and my abilities with them enough to be confident in using them for local hunting... With the appropriate hunting bullets of course.

Because wolf hunting often involves taking shots at a running animal or having to find the target extremely quickly while it is very briefly standing still.... Rifle choice aside, do you really want to attempt this with a cartridge that has 6 inches of drop at 200 yards off a 50 yard zero?.... Not to mention that in many hunting scenarios for wolf, shots far exceed 200 yards.....

Sounds like what the rifle was designed for actually...

"Ie: taking shots at a running animal or having to find the target extremely quickly while it is very briefly standing still." Minus of course that the wolf isn't shooting back. ;) :)

Like our deer our local wolves are often seen much closer then yours. If your needing to shoot them out to 200 yards then yes choose a cartridge with longer legs.

Actually over the years several 7.62x39 hunters have posted pics here on CGN. Bear, deer, etc. I personably know of others but they are more into enjoying hunting then taking pics.

Anyway...
