HOLY COW whats the next thing you guys are going to waaaaaay off topic about.
Next time take it to PM so the rest of the forum does'nt have to read threw all that garbage
Hoytcannon actually brought the 410 into the discussion.... That being said, my son's remington 870 in .410 scoped with cantilevered rifled barrel and 3" sabots will punch a 3" group at 100.... How many SKS's can actually punch a regular 3" group at 100 yards since you brought up that number?
A number of years ago I tried some handloads in an SKS. The result was a 10 shot, 6 inch group at 200 yards.
That's certainly accurate enough to kill a wolf, and the 7.62x39 is more than capable. Neither SKS or 7.62x39 would be my first choice, but I'd take it over a .410 slug any day.

Pretty common for SKS rifles to be used for hunting these days. I've probably seen more SKS in the field than SMLE's in the last couple of years.

Must be a BC thing, maybe due to......................I'll leave it at that.![]()
No wolf but as I mentioned above, I shot a yote with an SKS. It died.
I imagine hundreds of wolves have been killed with SKS rifles in Russia and those funny countries over there.
Using a SKS on a wolf or any other animal would require similar restraints as using a 30-30 win for the same purpose...in reality how many wolves across canada do you think have been taken with the 30-30 in the past 100 years?
IMHO, I think in the present time and for the last + half century we are caught up in the printed BS ramblings of the so called experts (mag. writer/story telling/advertising selling/literary experts) as to what is needed to humanely harvest said game....most of it is without a doubt nothing more than biased bull shyt of one mans opinion.
Its been my experience over the last 45+ years of hunting game animals in Western Canada that they are NOT hard to kill....but thats just my personal observation and it certainly doesn't make as great of a story.
Its all good, instead of arguing which is best, participate and enjoy!![]()
Now if only OP had asked "What calibers have killed wolves in th epast and what can I use if I reastrict myself to under 150 yards" instead of asking what is a good caliber for wolf hunting....
True enough BUT it certainly appears the thread got derailed to a SKS capability arguement on the last few pages!

Because wolf hunting often involves taking shots at a running animal or having to find the target extremely quickly while it is very briefly standing still.... Rifle choice aside, do you really want to attempt this with a cartridge that has 6 inches of drop at 200 yards off a 50 yard zero?.... Not to mention that in many hunting scenarios for wolf, shots far exceed 200 yards.....
All well and good... would be happy to see someone who actually harvested a wolf with an sks...lots of talk here.... I can 0ost pics of mine with 270 .... anyone else have true harvest experience or is the sks crowd tslking out its ass again?
