Transporting Restricted Firearm laws

I called CFO and they said I could use my transfer notice as proof because it has all the same info as the reg. cert. anyway.

I think it all depends upon who is manning the phone the day you call. I have gotten all sorts of contradictory answers from those CFO folks.

Right or Wrong, I have always considered a NOT a temp REG and used it as such.

Was told that the registrations get printed in batches which may lag the NOT by 2-4 weeks.

The Criminal Code Section 117.03(1)(a) states that if you can't produce a valid Registration Certificate (for fire-arms which need them) on the spot, then the police may Seize your gun.

Paragraph (2)(b) says that following such Seizure, you may produce the Certificate within 14 days and have it returned ‘without delay.’

What exactly qualifies as a Certificate? S.117.12(1) says that your Xeroxes of Certificates can be evidence (i.e., your say-so), but sub-section (2) does not consider them to be True Copies, so the cop on the road-side is not required to believe them. A True Copy is basically a notarized copy, which has been examined line-by-line to certify that nothing has been changed.

To allay people's fears, I highly doubt that a [non- True] copy would actually be rejected; so long as it's legible, it's verifiable.

You don't need the registration certs with you! You do need to follow all transport laws

Well that's a contradiction, as the Conditions of [lawful] Transport in-variably require you to have the Registration Certificates with you.

I have everything on my mobile device, home computer, external harddrive, ICloud, and Gmail to re-print should something happen to anything

Okay, I'm not fitting out people for foil head-wear, but if you asked your lawyer first he would tell you this could be a bad idea. Hand your un-locked smart 'phone over, or log in to a computer at the station or whatever, you have now potentially permitted the police legal access to *ALL* the information you have stored there. They won't find anything though (right?).

I just called the CFO sometime back and requested copies of everything they had registered to me . Do that a couple times and you have duplicates .

While I concur with this strategy, it technically does not work. The Registration number on your Certificate has a number appended (in the form .000n). When a new one is issued, they add +1 to n, which in-validates the previous one. It's like trying to run your old credit card through the check-out at CostCo, when they've given you another one with an up-dated expiry date, or something.

Not that anyone would notice.

Also you will often find that, even though the sheet they print Certificates on has space for four separate ones, and many pages can certainly be mailed in a standard envelope at the same rate, each one will be printed and mailed separately. Despite the fact that the entire job was obviously requested at the same time. Probably an excuse to spend their budget to prove it doesn't need to be cut.

i photocopy my ATT and my cards and put them in my cases, but lately i have been putting a PDF of them on my phone.

that said, ive been shooting restricted for 25 years and go to the range at least once a week and i have never been stopped or asked to produce any paperwork.

but im sure the day i didnt have all the stuff on me would be the day i hit a checkstop and they ask for it, haha

If you ask, the CFO will usually email you a copy of the form. just print it yourself. I had mine before I was off the phone with them.

I've always carried all my paperwork in my hard case with handguns. Good tip about not carrying it in there though. I think I'll get a range bag with a separate lockable compartment and carry paperwork in a different compartment. (GOD I hope that's legal)

So reading all this nobody seems to know for sure what the LEO's will say. I would rather have the documents and not need then than not have them when asked. I typically take a copy of everything I get from CFO and throw them in my restricted case. Easy, simple, quick. If you are following the transport requirements what is the problem in opening the case. In my experience with LEO's you are more likely to get in trouble with attitude than you are by trying to be cooperative. No guarantees but usually common sense prevails unless you start being a dumba--e.

Multiple copies in various locations seems to be (a logical) consensus.

Do this instead of praying to god... He won't help you much against the Feds.

My wallet with all my i.d. And pal was stolen. Cfo told me they're behind , so it could take up to 6 weeks to get a new one. That means no range trips ,buying firearms and ammo etc. Got my drivers licence in the mail in less than 2 weeks. Was issued a temp till then- why no temp pals if system is so slow?

H:S: You don't need the registration certs with you! You do need to follow all transport laws and carry your RPAL and ATT. This coming from another guy who was caught in a speed trap going to the range oncef:P:2:.

Yes, the LEO wanted access to my guns in the trunk and ordered me to open the case because in his words "I need to see your paperwork {ATT} and ensure that they {the guns} are safe {trigger locked/disabled}". I complied, I wasn't about to get into some "sh1thouse lawyer" legal argument with the guy. I figured he's the cop, if he's wrong (about the access) so be it, it'd be on him not me...I did as he asked. There was a Supervisor on the scene and no one asked for my registration, because I don't need it and here's why: Where is it Illegal to lend your restricted to someone else...{hang on, before you freak out let's run the scenario} A father and son living in the same residence are both members of the same Club, to which they both have ATT's for, and they are both RPAL holders. On the day in question, the son asks Dad to borrow his revolver to take to the range. Dad say's go for it...and the kid runs into the speed trap like I did. Where is the Law violated? {ahem, aside from the speeding thing:)}

Who cares who's gun it is (as long as we're not talking about used in a crime type of thing)...The kid is licenced to own and properly transport restricted firearms from his residence to the range...case closed.

To turn this scenario around, what if he did bring registrations and the LEO's found he was in possession of his fathers firearm and the kid says Dad loaned it to me for the day!?

This scenario is not autobiographical to my incident BTW, I just used it as an example. The guns were mine, and I haven't lived with my Father for some 27 years now :p

Unless you have the only ATT in Canada to not have the reg cert condition, you most certainly do need to have them.
