I remember many years ago there where a small number of ump's and G36's for sale in Canada. Why have no more come in? seems like in the last ten years or so someone would have found a way.

The ones that came in never really should have come in for civilian sales. Them being sold here was probably in violation of end user agreements between H&K and the original purchaser. German export laws prohibit the sale of military arms to civilians, and require end user certificates.

As mentioned, this has changed recently and H&K is now planning on making G36's for the civilian market.

Well then, It's time for me to start saving! hopefully they don't butcher it into some watered down civilian version. I remember having the chance to buy one when they came in, but I passed it by. Ive been kicking myself over that for years.

First part is dead on;

But nothing changed, the German government had partial rights to the G36's development which is why they could never convince them to be allowed to make a true civilian variant.

Since the patent on the G36 just expired; HK can now do what they want - and that means making a semi-auto variant that the German military can't protest.

They still need to submit the rifle to the German authority for determining 'civilian' guns, and hence why there will be several differences (from what I heard it'll have the screws for takedown instead of a pushpin but not 100% sure on that) and will also have a barrel and trunion different from the G36 series so you can't use any barrel between them. This also has potential benefits - supposedly the Trunnion has been beefed up considerably so it no longer suffers from the heat softening the plastic up and changing POI (good for target shooting and 3-gun stuff where - the Americans at least - they run their guns hard)

^ USA version and it is an option, not std equipment on euro/rest of world version

Standard Military version that is out right now it is an option. The new civie version that is about to be released it is standard. HK can't send them out using mags designed for their military version. Same as the SL8 had its own proprietary mags when it came out.

It is hard for a company that can't turn a profit to expand their market share.

If their attitude wasn't "Because you suck and we hate you!" towards the civilian market for so long, maybe they would not be worth less than their debt right now. The military is not the only client in the world, sadly it's taking going damn near bankrupt for them to realize this.

There were 10 of each G36's including the K and C models plus 10 UMPs each 9mm and 40 S&W. They were imported on a permit for theatrical use which was then used to sell them people. I owned one of each. A few years ago i contacted HK about buying some parts. They were less than helpful. The civilian model will not accept the trigger groups for the military/LE models.

Thats fine, G36 mags work in the canadian/Euro SL8 with a slight modification to the mag, The USA had their own version with a single stack per their own gun laws.

I'd be happy with something similar but would not be interested if only Stanag complaint

Yes, you just needed a slight modification, but that is how they got around their federal laws on the export of military purpose hardware. This time, to appeal to the civilian market, they are sending them with a stanag magwell so everyone out there with their stockpile of 100 pmags will not be deterred by having to buy new accessories or adapters for their already existing accessories. Let's face it, there is a hell of bunch more AR lags out there than G36 mage, appealing to the masses. My understanding from the little bit of existing info available about the new civie version is that a standard G36 magwell should be able to be dropped in place. Most of the changes are internal to make it a semi only version. Older modular pieces should fit.

the SL8 is internally different than a G36, the magazine change was minor except for the USA market ones as they required USA made parts to allow their sale in the USA so it required different parts again.

This fact remains the same now, There will be a USA marketed version (most likely produced by HK USA) and canada will get the one the rest of the world gets that is produced 100% in Germany.

The G36 mag is a better design, The Stanag mag has seen constant upgrades/version changes since it was designed and still does today. I have never had a Mag issue with a G36 type mag of any manufacture, I can not say the same for a stanag/ar mag.
