Been coyote hunting for several years now and due to a combo of bad luck, missed shots, low population and lack of fields I had not bagged a dog till today!

I noticed lots of tracks on a logging road near home so i went out today and set up, fresh tracks as usual. Put the foxpro 80 yds out and a bunny decoy. Turned it on cottontail and the dog came running in within 3-4 minutes.

Wind was at my back (green) decoy and caller (blue dot) dog came in (orange) at a fast trot but slowed about 130 yds out and started to get suspicious. Took the shot and it wheeled back and went in the woods but not very fast so I knew I hit it somewhere ( I hate running shots, why can't these things sit for a while??)

I tracked it for a long ways with drips of blood till I caught it in a swamp and finished it. Turns out the shot broke it's left front elbow, don't think it would die from that, not right away.

Congrats for sure. Heres a couple pointers that may help you on the next hunt.

1/ caller distance - you really don't need anymore then 40 yards kept to the side (upwind slightly)
2/ Try some white to break up your dark camo. This helps with snow on the ground.
3/ shooting stix or bipod only helps keep the movement down of the gun and try if you have to move when the coyote is moving not standing still.

Great hunt ! and its great you followed up. Keep at it.

Thanks for the pointers.

The camo I have on is lousy Rocky reversible camo/snow camo but the idiots who made it put the waterproof layer on the woods camo side, snow camo side gets wet and cold but I suppose I'm the bigger idiot for buying it!;)

I was sitting in the woods in shadows and using my homemade ski poles/ shooting stix but a 30 lb coyote trotting at 130 yds is tricky.

Oh I'm gonna keep at it, wish the hunting here was like out west but it is what it is!

Congrats on your first! I just got my first this year, and am not a pro by any means. Some great tips mentioned, I would only add:

1) the wind was at your back, so he might have been catching your scent. If you try to make stands with the wind in your face, from where you expect to see them, they are more likely to stop.

2) when they get where you want to take the shot, let out a couple sharp barks, or lip squeak like a mouse, sometimes they will pause for a shot. The rest of the time, keep one eye peeking behind you, they will try and circle down wind to see what the noise was.

Good job, keep it up!

Congrats on your first!! Don't be fooled by the out west coyote hunting. Yes there are lots here but the open country works two ways. They can pick you out a long ways off too.

Spank ! don't tease me !!!!! lol

I hope no one takes my reply wrong. I never intended to degrade the thread or CP . As I read the story it placed me into the hunt and I just thought I would share what I do on my sets just to help that's all. Its still great to see a guy get his first , it reminds me back with my first...

Guys, next time you have miss and the Yote starts running full out let out a super loud whistle (if you can) if its loud enough he will stop in his tracks.

We tried this and got a dog to stop 2 times and missed 3 times (Nephew dropped the rifle and didn't tell his dad) shots were going 2 feet left....

Congrats.

I hunt the same type of terrain here and I also have the exact same jacket. It is much more comfortable to wear white side in. That being said, I still put the Winter Camo out when I go in the snow areas whether or not the outside part is waterproof.
