Hey guys,

Long time lurker and I'm sorry I don't post too much, to be honest I don't know enough about guns to be able to contribute much in the way of content so I generally stay away from posting on this forum!

Anyway, I'm looking for some advice. I have been looking at something close to an AR that would be non restricted for shooting coyotes but also for a bit of training and drills I would like to try next summer. I got a line on a used Benelli MR1 which looks to be very good shape, for $1,500. Rifle comes with 4 magazines, fore grip, cheapo NC star laser, cheaper bushnell 3X scope, and a really nice metal case. Are there any experienced owners that could chime in on this gun versus say the Robinson XCR-L? Ergonomics, reliability, accuracy and looks are all important to me. Finally, the broader question, is this a good deal on this gun? I have been looking at the XCR for a while, and although the price tag scares me a little (especially since you still are adding optics), I really like the feel and fit and finish on the XCR. I also like the fit and finish of the MR1, and definitely the price appears alright to me, it would just be my second pic if the race were solely down to "looks" rather than performance.

Hoping to gain some knowledge here, hopefully some experienced guys can chime in. Thanks in advance.

Seems expensive for used, that's what they cost new.

Ergo's aren't the same as an AR. They aren't perfect, but once you get used to them they're not too bad.
If you want same ergos as an AR the MR1 isn't for you.

My MR1's have been %100 reliable, but have only put around 2500 rounds through each of them.

Accuracy wise, first shot is always around 1" high, then a 2nie sized group at 100 is very easy to do. That's with wolf ammo. Norc ammo shoots good too. AE shoots a 4" group in both mine? 40grn Vmax is very accurate, but expensive, but good enough to gopher hunt with it.

Hope that helps

Collapsible stock? Or fixed? Or fixed-traditional?

The MR-1 is not a "project gun." Once you've got one you're pretty much set up. The only minor changes have already been done to the one you're looking at.

My best advice is: try and shoot both before you drop cash down. ~50 rounds through a gun will tell you more than ~50 pages of internet talk.

This!

Thanks guys. I forgot to mention it also comes with both the collapsible and the fixed stock with pistol grip. Shooting the gun is not possible as this is a chain store, they don't even take the trigger lock off :(

Walked into the store last night to take another look at the MR1 and buddy in front of me was getting his visa out to pay for said gun. Everything happens for a reason I guess!

I recomend the MR-1 for reliability, easy maintenance and accuracy, iv'e got 5K rounds out of one of mines, with only 2 failures due to primer and with Scenars 77 gr it was a MOA rifle, my preference before a XCR, true ergononics are a bit different but after a while you dont even think about it... JP.

Got an SKS (my first rifle), so I guess I'm just looking at more ways to spend my money... aren't we all, ha ha!

Well then. I would tell you to get an AR-15 which would be PERFECT for your situation but our benevolent government said no.

Because Fu ck you.

That said, how about a Mini-14 ?

Ruled out the xcr, to me it seems to be a bit of a gamble on a very pricey rifle... Took a look at the local shop and it is a nice looking rig but even the owner was talking me out of it. Not for me I don't think. Looking into the tavor and the t97 now... Too many toys to purchase!

You wont get disappointed with the tavor if you get the timney trigger with it. the trigger is the only thing that bothers me about my tavor. yes it's pricey, but it's built like a tank and it shoots pretty good, you would be pretty surprised, look at my thread on Tavor ammo.

But oddly enough i have a Tavor and I'm looking into getting a MR1 now and I also didn't like the feel of the xcr... We must be cut from the same cloth...

Its not a gamble, just lots of haters out there who don't know what they are talking about. However, if you don't like the feel, that's a totally different issue.

Also, Benelli's are great firearms. I have not used the MR-1, but I doubt they'd let their name go on it if it wasn't up to their standards which are high. I've owned several (from a lowly Nova to my carbon fiber supersport), and they've all been extremely well made and thought out.

Go for the Tavor! I'll be ordering one hopefully next week when I do my taxes. :)
