The CBC tweets that the biathlon is assassins training!!!

Why would anyone get their assassin's training from an Olympic sport? Its much easier to get your training from video games like Assassin's Creed. Hell I got all my military training from Call of Duty and Battlefield!!

After asking for an apology, they kinda sorta attempted to apologize. Rather than try another pathetic attempt at a link, I just copied and pasted it here.

@reason911 Hi there, this was a regrettable choice of words and we did not intend to offend anyone.

I tweeted Ezra and Brian.

From reading the original, it was apparent that they did intend to offend, make that "insult",
the firearms and their users. They thought they were being clever by pretending to make it
a joke. It was neither funny, nor a joke.

But hey, there's a few dozens of them watching the Sochi Games for free and
I'm sure travelling First/Business class and feasting and partying while there.
One of them tried a "mot d'esprit"; to me it came out as mot of spite.

Well, I guess if you plan on doing a drive by on a bunch of Igloo's it might come in handy. Swish swish, bang, swish swish, bang....

I just saw a young couple go by on cross country skis. Should I alert the authorities?

Just mention to the 911 operator that they could be possible assassins according to the CBC!

These guys just went full retard! My son competed with the Royal Canadian Air Cadets in Biathlon and took Silver and Bronze over the two years he competed. Since the Canadian Government supports the Air Cadets financially does this mean that they support Assassin training? Am I now living with a teenage assassin!

FULL TURBOCHARGED RETARD! = CBC .............not even worth listening to!

LOL, that pretty pathetic assassin training then!

Edit: A working link may help.

Edit: The tweet has disappeared.

Exactly, I am puzzled as to how this turned into an anti-CBC rant??

It probably IS the closest thing we have to "assassin training" - cool.

What's closer, ice dancing??

I think there's a broader context that makes the criticism valid.

I recall an interview I listened to as a kid (around the time of a previous Winter Olympics) where a former biathlon participant emphasized the lack of support for the sport during the early 1970s stemming from its association with paramilitary training.

There was a rather aggressive attempt to marginalize anything related to the military during the 1970s. The fallout of the anti-war movement was particularly strong here in Canada on account of the huge numbers of US draft dodgers who filled the ranks of the media (in particular the CBC) and academia. It wouldn't surprise me if the younger generation of CBC workers were significantly influenced by the outgoing generation of employees who were so immersed in that culture.

The biathlon is the evolution of military training into a peaceful sport. As are most Olympic competitions. CBC'c joke is just as bad as a race based joke. It perpetuates negative stereotypes. Some people can see it as a joke, and others see it as an observation of a sport that promotes violence. Before their tweet, I read a comment somewhere asking "How is this even a sport?" It doesn't take much for some idiot to get on their soap box to call fo a ban of this sport in Canada.
