Mountain Rifle with Grizzly capability..your thoughts?

There is ONE cartridge that does both needs excellently............the 340 Wby in a 7 lb rifle.........enough medicine for any grizzly that ever roamed a mountain and a trajectory like a 7 mag.

So neither you or the guided hunter did have a firearm?
Were you bow hunting?
Your story is ridiculous
Obviously you haven't read posts about, bears, guns, pepper spray, etc. in this thread. A firearm was never needed, case in fact, we wanted to see grizzlies, and as many as we can. Many talk the talk on forums but in real life most would tuck tail and run like a gelded horse. BTW, in a earlier post of mine I did suggest a Weatherby rifle and it's cartridge.

No "Dinner Bell Bears" on Vancouver Island.

I grew up in the Cariboo and spent a lot of time in Chetynd and Ft.Nelson area . The grizz i remember most is the one where the Peace and Pine river meet 1972 on the recovery of a moose found a Grizz had cliamed it even thow i hang my teeshirt up at the kill the man smell so to speak it was stuffed in the moose and then covered in brush . The Grizz made his stand the hunter i hade made his shot the front of the bear caved but he was pushing himeselt with his hind legs snapping and growling i just moved a side and cracked him in the top of the neck done bear my hunter was having trouble breathing thats all i would have needed to do as pack him out as well

if it s not killing the grizzly at least the shoulder of the shooter will be ... especially with a mark V stock ...

Actually yes there are as well as bears attracted to gunfire.
I have experienced this first hand while sighting in a rifle on crown land.

Having two bears doing a predatory circle around you while closing in is not fun.

The theory being that some Bears are starting to think gunfire means deer gut pile and other tasty (to a bear) scraps left behind.

I get a little tired of all you testosterone inflated rednecks talking about injuring bears just for being bears... it is their home, "you" are the invader... leave the guns and spray at home... bears are mostly just misunderstood... enter the forests with love and understanding and hugs... you can deflate a bad situation with a cheerful hello and wave... attitude is everything...

Yea i agree ! 26 Blackies and 2 G bears down now and soon to make the count higher ! RJ

interesting thread. Read most of it since I am thinking along the same lines as the OP, planning a goat hunt where grizzly may be a concern. Have 2 rifles, my deer/blackbear rifle which is a compact 243, and a 338WM I have for the bigger stuff. Not that the 243 wouldn't do the job on a goat, but I'm thinking the 338 is more sensible for my plans. My model 70 338WM currently weighs in at just under 9lbs total with scope, sling, loaded. I was thinking I'd cut the barrel to 22ish", maybe trim a little weight here and there with a few small changes, and install in a light stock to drop it to 7.5-8lbs ready to go. Would make it light enough for carrying, a little more handy size in the bush for moose and elk hunts, and hopefully still be manageable with a limbsaver recoil pad on it. Doing as much as possible myself to keep costs reasonable. Sure a dedicated mountain rifle would be great, but if I can get it done with the ones I have all the better for now.

I'm all for avoidance, but if all goes well, wouldn't mind carrying something substantial while packing meat out. Have had close encounters with grizzlies while calling moose (ended uneventfully when the bear figured out I wasn't a cow and backed off), and bears in camp in the middle of the night as well. I'm thinking the 338WM (or similar medium bore) is an ok compromise, though not really down to mountain rifle weight. Rather carry an extra pound then to go all out and need a muzzle break.

I remember when that article came out, must be 25 years ago. If that worked all a bear hunter would have to do is walk out to a nice vantage spot and fire random shots in the air, and shoot the bear of his choice when he came in. Somehow I don't see that working out so great.

I agree with what you are saying Dogleg, bears will not come to gun shots but I have on more than one occasion have them come in when calling moose and elk.

What's a Samsung S4?

RJ I think I've got you on the bear count too but I quit counting blackies many years ago and I have 4 grizzlies I think, wait I gave one away must be 5..........blackies I would conservatively estimate 40 and likely closer to 50. I just love killin BBs with my 350 RM........I just can't help myself !! Especially in that last 2 weeks of May when they are like gophers in the Yukon, you can see a dozen in a 2 hr drive............
