Hi,

I picked up a TRG 22 last year and have been enjoying learning to shoot it, I like the idea of honing my shooting skills and competing with others to help gauge my progress.

I was wondering how welcoming/tolerant the shooting competitions are? As a newbie still learning would I just annoy everyone with my bad shooting?

How are the BC rifle association events (F-TR I class I think) for newbies?

Are there any "precision groups/clubs" that do regular shoots together to advance/build skill?

I'm a member with Mission Rod & Gun club. I noticed on their website they have a "Centre Fire Bench Rest" on Sundays, but I can't find much else on the website. Can anyone tell me more about them? Are they a closed event or are they accepting new participants? Is it a precision shooting group? are these a "learning/skills" building event or a scored competition event? Are there any rules?

Thanks,
April

Mission is very good for he kind of thing you are looking to do. - I was a member there till leaving the LMD. The club championship is a good event to start with - they have a rookie or sporter class also. Machinist and Gunsmoke on here are members and top-level shooters who will likely chime in,

Kamloops (KTSA) have a couple of F-Class matches ( Frosty Farky and Running of V-Bulls) that are great for newbies to start. Very friendly and welcoming folks.

try this for f class style shooting.

Mission is a great club. I am a member there too. I have been to the bench rest sunday the guys there are top notch and love to have new shooters. At mission there is also club 300 and they are listed on the club website some were.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Do I need to contact or sign up with anyone to go to the Bench Rest Sundays or Club 300 (haven't seen it on the schedule yet but I'll keep my eye's open for it).

I haven't come across anything about a "Club Championship" as mission. Is that part of the Bench Rest Sundays or Club 300 or is that a different thing?

I looked up the KTSA (thanks for the suggestion).

Thanks

A TRG-22 is a very nice rifle - congrats, you'll have a lot of fun with it.

Shooting in matches and in practices etc with other good shooters is the best way for you to develop your shooting skills. Don't "wait until you're ready"; hurry on up and jump in right away!

"As a newbie still learning would I just annoy everyone with my bad shooting?" - not at all. Provided you have the right attitude (which is mostly just common consideration and courtesy), you absolutely belong on the range with everybody else. The key is knowing when to ask for help, and when to allow other shooters to do their shooting without interruption. It's best if you can find yourself a mentor, someone who is experienced and has a personality compatible with you, who can show you and talk to you about how things are done, how to be prepared, etc.

You should do as much shooting as you possibly can at Mission and also with BCRA (at the military range in Chilliwack). A number of the local Mission shooters are very familiar with BCRA shooting and can help you.

You need to contact me, Jim Latham, since I organize the CF Benchrest Monthly matches at Mission. Use my E mail lathamconsult@telus.net

We appreciate the positive feedback you have seen from others. We have been welcoming new members since we started this up two years ago. If you are looking for information on everything related to Rifle, look in the contacts list for Chris Johb who is the rifle chair and he can inform you about all the different rifle disciplines. In the case of CF Benchrest our next monthly match is March 2nd. We meet at 8;00 for set up and matches run from 9:00 Am until about 11:30.

You should also make an effort to get to the BC tac rifle shoot in june! It is tons of fun and the same welcoming folks! Very challenging!

I'm interested in this, but I think a spotter is needed to compete, right? I don't have anyone that spots with me, I think I need to make more shooting friends before I can join this. I just ordered a spotting scope so at lease I'll have the first piece of the puzzle.

You can show up and get a partner. Usually lots of singles looking for partners. The best way to learn how to spot is to just jump in there and get some experience. Don't be afraid no one will laugh at you or look down on you for not knowing everything. In fact it's usually the otherway around. Guys have respect for those that come out for the first time knowing that it's going to be a great learning experience. Don't miss out on this one. It hasn't run for that last two years and I'm sure this year it will sell out quickly.

I googled "BC tac rifle shoot" and came up with the following 2 pages;

http://www.bcrifle.org/disciplines.html

http://bcprecisionrifle.com/Home.html

The only page that I found that has to do with registration is this one;

http://www.bcrifle.org/schedule.html

The only registration that seems to work right now is the BCRA form. Am I looking in the right place? or is the site/registration somewhere else?

I also found this page with the schedule;

http://www.bcrifle.org/misc/2014/2014-LMR-Schedule-Feb22.pdf

Does anyone know what Club 600 is, where they shoot, or where I can find anymore information about them?

Thanks,
April

We are Hosting three FClass events at the Club this year , First one Goes April 19 , Its a good one to take in to get your feet wet , its all shot @ 300 , the second Match is a two Day , its the Seirra Match June 7 & 8 , we usually hold an FClass clinic the weekend before this match, The Last match at Mission is on June 22 , its our Club match, I am Match director for this match so if you need Info on this match or any other matches at Mission you can PM me or my contact info is on the Mission website , I am the Rifle chair. With your Trg , I assume its a .308 you will be shooting in FTR, Total weight of you Rifle including Scope and bi pod cannot
exceed 8.25 kgs, no bullet weight restriction , but if it has a brake you have to remove it. I am usually at the Range every Saturday morning practicing , so if you come out I can show you the ropes and how the scoring works , and show you the Fclass target we use for the Matches, FClass is a fantastic discipline to shoot at , it really tests your skills as a shooter, we have quite a few accomplished shooters at our club and also the Kamloops shooters that attend our matches are seasoned top knotch competitors that will help you along as well , so come out to the club, get involved we are allways happy to invite new shooters into the sport.
Club 600 is at Volks in Chilliwack , you have to get a BCRA membership to shoot at Volks , you will also need the membership to shoot in some of the other local matches. The Western FClass championship match will also be at Volks this year.

Welcome and I hope that you take Machinist up on his offer to help. You will find a very good and helpful group of shooters that are also some of the best this country has to offer.

You will not know it all. Hell, most of us are still scratching our heads. But there is no better way to learn, to improve and figure out what is best for YOU then to launch lead at a scored target.

Keep good notes about your hits and misses. Every shot teaches us something.

Have fun and enjoy...MOST IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER.... THERE IS NO DUMB QUESTION EXCEPT THE ONE YOU DIDN'T ASK!!!!

Thanks for the information and links Paul, much appreciated.

Looks like everything is 2 Man Precision Rifle Team, I'll have to find myself a 2nd.

The standing part worries me about this competition. Holding a 15lb rifle steady while standing is hard for me, I think I need to be shorter, fatter, and stronger. I was trying it this past weekend and I was surprised how horrible my groups were. I wonder what distance they make you shoot standing and how they score it. I need to buy a sling and figure out how to use it to help steady the rifle while standing.

Thanks

ARH77,
Partners are not needed. There are plenty of others that come as singles and need to be paired up. You are better off working on shooting from prone position at 1 minute targets at 100m than practicing the standing. The standing was only 5 rounds if I remember correctly (out of over 200 ?) Also quick target acquisition at various distances is a handy skill to work on. The standing may or may not be one of the stages. A sling may be a good idea as it may come in handy on some of the stages.

Like Paul says the standing was an extremely small bit of the total shooting. Almost everything else is prone. There should be no worries about any of this match anyways. It is extremely fun no matter what skill level you are at and everyone will understand your woes if you tank a stage or two. We are ALL probably going to tank a stage or two lol so we will all be right there with you!
The standing in question is shot from 100m at about an 8 inch circle. There are 5 circles going from 8 inches down to 2 inches(if I remember correctly). Its your choice what circles to shoot at in the standing, sitting and prone positions. Most guys shoot the biggest one standing then work their way down to the 2" prone. 5 shots in each position at whatever circle you want.
