NEW ANTIQUE FRT CHANGES and Addendum to altered cartridges handguns

Would a Swiss Vetterli antique in .41 Swiss rimfire still be classified as an antique if it has been modified to no longer shoot .41 rimfire, but .41 center fire handloaded ammo?

Mooncoon got it right, I looked up the gun too quick and didn't realize it was a repeater.

I dont see how they an institute a policy that is contrary to the letter of the law?

They're not changing anything. This is actually how the law is written, it just hasn't been enforced up to now.

I passed on a good deal on a Colt SAA in .38spc for this very reason; without a Colt factory letter there is no way to tell if it actually qualifies and in fact most SAAs were in .45LC originally so the odds are good most of the rebuilt Colts are a no-go. Perhaps if they come with original prarts in a caliber that's gtg like 41 colt or .455 you could make a case, but given that factory records are available we'll likely need to go that route.

No; it would become modern because the antique classification for pre 1898 repeating rifles only applied to rimfires. The availability of ammunition is not applicable

SOR/98-464 has not changed. Because antiques - unlike "non restricteds" - are defined in law, the RCMP's scuzzy FRT changes without modification of the law isn't worth squat.

(s.7 of) The above-mentioned SOR/98-464 has not changed since December 1, 1998.

Case closed.

These recent events remind me of the Empire Srtrikes Back. When Lando confronts Vader about the change in their 'deal' and Vader tells him to pray that he doesn't alter it any further. We really need a 'Return of The Jedi episode!!!!!

Thanks, guys for the clarification.

sooo, if i read that frt right, its only the colt 1889 series thats affected, not the 1873 SAA series that we see so much of up here?

Could be wrong but they only came in 41 LC, so... I'd think they are eyeing up the 1873 Peacemaker and it's multitude of calibres which can be swapped into a No-go gun, like a 45 LC to 45 ACP or Schofield.

Edit; the small print says the '89 came in the dreaded and deadly 38 LC. Did not know that.

It sounds like what Dingus mentioned was more of a policy change covering all antiques and the only direct gun named is a Colt 1889 in .357 which is a terrible caliber choice for that gun anyways.

Terrible? More like crazy or maybe even stupid.

an 1889 in 357? As absolutely idiotic as it would be to convert an old 89 into a 357, any New Army and Navy in 38 LC can chamber and fire this caliber. And then explode.

I can't express how disappointed I am in this decision, but I've been expected it. Too big of a loophole, too many knotheads blabbing about it on CGN.

I've been tempted by the converted revolvers but it was always in the back of my mind...it can't last! 38 Special; really? No I'll pass on that, too good to be true.
That and of course the 38 special sucks monkey butt...there is that too.
An '89 is good for 41 LC and that is about it anyhow. That undersized nose at .385 poking into the .405-.410 bbl is the only round that is doable in that oddity.
The individual at Colt who vouched for that lock-up system probably ended up sweeping floors. A definite step back from the bank vault system on the '73's
Just saying.

This is a coordinated action by the RCMP to separate a CPC loyal voting block in time for the election. They are using their regulatory power to steal an election from the Canadian people. This way they get the Liberals in and watch it happen.

I wish someone had some answers on this topic. I applied for an antique letter for my colt a few weeks ago and just called this morning to see if they were going to grant it antique status and the tech had no idea. This is total bullsh!t
