I'm looking at buying my first handgun which I will be reloading for. I'm really liking the S&W 686+ .357 mag with 6" barrel #150712 (7 round cylinder, medium frame). This is the version with the wooden handle. I like the .357 both for it's power and versatility (ie: ability to plink around with 38 special).

Firstly, anybody have this firearm and if so what are your thoughts?

Secondly, what any dealers out there that kind find me one or have one in stock?

Thanks for the input!

Randy

there nice I have a couple, but id look at the 6 shoot. If down the road you want to shoot in any of the shooting games 7 shot will be a problem .

Why will 7 shot be a problem for shooting games?

to the OP, I own one (wife bought it for my christmas gift) but haven't shot it yet..... so can't comment on much except she's a beauty to hold!

If he wants you shoot IPSC and use the revolver he has to reload after shooting 6 rounds if you forget and shoot the 7th one you have points taken away from you every time you do it
you can you it in USPSA matches this year they have a 8 shoot minor division or ICORE matches but most of these matches you have go to the US.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I suspected that people that own the gun would have positive things to say about it. Flyrrad, is your's the wooden handle version? Where was it purchased?

Mine has the round butt but I ordered the conversion "coke bottle" classic square butt grips in rosewood. Took a month to get, but they were (IMHO) well worth it.

I have the 686 - 6 and put a set of Hogue Round to Square conversion grips on it. Outstanding gun - lots of fun with .357 and easy to shoot with .38sp

Thank you, JB, for the clarification!

Same with PPC. 6 shots and then a reload. You will also have to find 7 shot speed loaders which are tougher to find plus you're always dumping a live round on the ground during every reload. You have to really pay attention to how many shots you have taken if the gun exceeds 6 rounds. I really wanted a 5" 686 but the only ones I could find were 7 shots so that turned me off getting one.

I own one and love it. If I ever decided to compete, I would just load to 6 and be done with it. Not hard to do.

I don't know about IPSC but in PPC when you're shooting the faster stages (eg. 12 shots in 20 seconds), having to align the cylinder so the empty chamber lines up with the barrel during the reload is going to cost you time.

I've shot the 686 at Target Sports, awesome gun. I've ordered the 586 blued version

I prefer the blued version. Stainless are good too.

That is a sweet gun - love those grips. My 4.2" version just arrived in the mail on Monday. I have a set of grips being made by Ahrends right now and I should have them in a few weeks. Can't wait!
