This place lacks a Mosin presence!

I recently acquired my first two Mosins. I bought a 1943 M38 off a friend and loved it so much that I went out and found a 1942 at a LGS here in Wpg. the next day.

Well we finally had a Saturday "warm" enough to go shooting, so I took my bubba'd Mosin out for a spin (see post #43).

The conditions weren't completely ideal...

All I had on hand was some old Russian surplus and a box each of PPU 150gr SP and MFS 150gr FMJ to test. After a few zeroing shots I started shooting groups and found that the Russian surplus and the PPU would only shoot about 2.5" groups, and the MFS was much worse.

PPU 150gr SP, 4 shots at 100 yards...

I was disappointed, but after a while I noticed that the first shot in each group shot with the surplus and PPU was always pretty close to the point of aim, with the subsequent follow-up shots opening up. To verify I fired a few single cold bore shots with the Russian surplus stuff...

So...mixed results. As the barrel warms up the groups spread out pretty badly, but cold bore shots are surprisingly consistent. My scope mount setup was also still rock solid after 60 shots over the course the day, so I'm pretty happy with that. I'm also pleasantly surprised by the Russian surplus ammo, it performed a lot better than I expected it would. I'm glad this old girl likes the cheap stuff.

My goals for next time are to dig up some better ammo (or some hand loads) to try a few more groups, and then maybe stretch it out past 100 yards. Right now it's pretty clear this isn't going to be a tack-driving competition rifle, but as a bush carbine and general hunting rifle it seems to have potential.
