.375 Ruger....

Speaking of "new kings" I'm always reminded of Charles over there in England.

Seems to me both him and these rifles they're talking about are kind of flop eared lame ducks. Probably where they got the nickname.

I dub thee ".375 Chawles". Where others go "BANG!" thou goest 'poof'.

Going on a brown bear hunt in Alaska Buddy says my .338 win mag shooting 225 grain hornadys at 3050 fps for over 20 years is too small. Everything I can read says this has better shock value albeit lesser wound channel than the 375 h&h which he says I need. Am I under gunned ? Looked at .375 ruger but again once in a life time hunt. Big bucks for a one time rifle. Love my .338 and have shot just about everything except brown and polar bear with it. Do I need to change? Advise please

Your .338 will serve the purpose just as well as a .375 H&H, and probably twice as good as a .375 Ru..Ru...damn, I just gag on that word. You know the one I mean, that half baked plastic imposter they're trying to flog the past few years.

I have PERSONALLY seen 2 grizzleys go down HARD with a .338winmag. One was with 250 grain HORNADY INTERLOCK (plain cup n core bullets) and the other was a 225 accubond. So, you are NOT undergunned. I would rather you hunt with an adequate (in every way) .338wm and be proficient with the rifle, than a bigger one that you aren't as familiar with and one that kicks more.
BUT, you should at least shoot a .375 of one flavor or another just to see if you want to handle that kind of recoil. (remembering that if you have a GRIZZLEY in your crosshairs, I doubt you'd feel the recoil of a bazooka)

Im sure you will be fine, unless you are using sst.If you need a new 375 go get one.We allways NEED new iron.Make sure you put lots of rounds down the pipe.

What kind of load do you have in your .338 Win Mag to achieve 3050fps? Even Hornady Superformance only list the 225gr at 2840fps.

Agreed, those are the velocities I get with my 338 RUM in a 26" barrel and about 200 fps above published 338 Win maximum loads

If you intend to use the 338 for coastal grizzly, at least lose the Hornady bullet and work up a good load with a 250 Nosler Part. These bears are not to be trifled with, they are big and 4X as aggressive as mountain grizzly. They really do require a lot of killing, given a bear unaware that you are there, a 300 Mag with 200 gn bullets is more than adequate, but when the tables turn they require more killing than any other NA animal. You want a bullet that imparts a lot of shock and penetrates deeply, Partitions are the best at this, or A-frames. Leave the C+C bullets at home and spend the money to work up a load with Parts or A-frames, trust me !!! These bears are absolutely immense and ill tempered and will charge without provocation, they are the size of a large horse and can take lead like a Cape buff, seriously. If ever there was an excuse to own a 375 H&H or a 416 Taylor, Rem or Rigby, these bears qualify..............

Ignore the previous doubters, that's what I got from 338s as well with 225s and an honest 2850 fps with 250 Parts and IMR 4350.

WoW ! Holy Crap - that will do in any Brown Bear - 338-378 WBee power out of a 338 WMag ! YOU should use a BETTER Premium bullet though the Hornady 338 is not a real tough bullet ! ;) RJ

c-fbmi must have created himself a new account under BrianR!;)

Not me, obviously just another informed gentleman who understands reloading and cartridge/rifle capabilities. I don't doubt his load at all, I get almost 3200 from my 340 with 225s and right around 3100 with 250s, 26" tube. I loaded some 200 gn Speers for a fellow who had a 338 and chrono'd them at approaching 3200 fps. 3000 with a 225 is doable, quite likely has a 26" tube as well which the rifle I loaded for did not.

74gr IMR 4350 225 gr hornady browning SS26" barrel 10 shot chrono average 3050 fps largest variance 27 fps
