Hey Guys. new to the forum. I'm in the market for a good, cheap, reliable 22 LR. what are your thoughts? I've been looking into the Savage mk II. I also love the Henry Lever 22 hex barrel. Thoughts?

i realize the two guns are very different. i like the old school feel of the henry but the savage seems to be fairly reliable

You really can't go wrong with either. However, I would lean towards the Savage. Personally, I do most of my shooting off a bench; and thus a lever gun, while novel, is mostly useless.

Those rifles only have 22lr in common ... Name after the statement is for the WIN This is JMHO ......

Fun ...
Henry

Accuracy beyond 50 yards
Savage

Speed of follow up shot
Henry

Number of follow up shots
Henry

All types of 22lr ammo
Tie

Safety ( ease of use youth ) ... Gun in firing position .. with round in the breech (Henry has a half cocked safety )
Savage

Ease of clearing rifle of unfired rounds ( inspecting for clear )
Savage

Risk of strong arm RCMP reclassification to prohibited :)
Tie if semi auto is the line in the sand, Savage if based on a 5 round mag limitation.

Risk of discharge while reloading ( if leaver is left closed ) Leaver requires second conformation of clear .. reloading from the business end of the rifle ..
Savage

Best for youth with limited supervision .. see above
Savage

Bench shooting .. rabbit tacked on the target
Savage

Non bench shooting ... rabbit in open field .. moving
Henry

I love my Henry frontier and with cci mini mags 36gr I can get .5-.75 off a bag @ 50 yards that's really good in my books for a lever! By far my favorite firearm... It's way too much fun!

CZ 452 or 455 if you can swing it, the Savage or a Marlin XT if you can't. Levers have their place, but bolt actions are so simple, reliable, accurate, easy to clean, tend to have the best triggers, etc. Levers (to me) are a pain to reload if you're shooting allot, and a pain to clean compared to a bolt gun. Your money, your gun....but I sold my Winchester 9422 years ago and haven't considered buying another lever since.

Well, I've got both. So my answer is obviously.... BOTH! :D

Seriously buy either for now and the other a little later when the toy money piggy bank is replenished. This is NOT and "either/or" sort of question. Each is lots of fun for different styles of shooting.

The two styles are so different that the two rifles support each other rather than overlap. The Savage begs to have a scope mounted and possibly a bipod and shoot for extreme accuracy. The Henry is all about learning to shoot well with iron sights and from a standing free style position.

Either way you want to get yourself a Caldwell rimfire flip and and reset steel target to go with your new rifle. With the Henry use it at 25 to 50 yards. With the Savage/CZ/other bolt action and scope start at 50 and work out to lobbing then in at 200. The instant gratification of seeing the paddles flip or kick around and the sound of the "DING!" is the stuff of grins. Paper is great for learning, testing or matches but nothing beats reactive targets for the simple fun of plinking.

savage, Remington, marlin are all good choices for budget 22's that are very accurate
I have had good results with all of them all for under 300 probly with a scope leaves lots of cash to buy plenty of ammo to shoot

My advice is either because if your like me you will eventually own several major 22LR's or at least want to.

I have a Marlin, Savage, Mossberg & Cooey in 22LR and hope to own a Henry, CZ, Browning, Ruger, Winchester, Thompson, etc. etc.

CZ!

(sorry, couldn't resist...)

My thoughts exactly. For less then $500 hard to beet these. Accurate, beautiful, great craftsmanship, great fit and finish, and will last forever.
Ive been down the savage route and well you get what you pay for. Accurate? Maybe if you get a good one. Reliable? Again if you get a food one. Fit and finish is really lacking on all the ones I had(about 8 I think I try to forget about them). But of you just want a cheap beater gun I guess they can work well for that.
Sold all savages and upgraded to all cz's. Should have just done that first because after fixing the cheap savages to have a normal stock and trying to get good accuracy cheaper to get a cz imho

Please. Do not overlook Zastava Z-5. All steel and wood, adjustable trigger, excellent open sights, steel mags outstanding steel craftsmanship. 305$ is a an incredible price for that kind of a rifle.

the thing i like about the henry is that it can take long and short.

If you want a "good, cheap, reliable 22 LR" that can shoot both long and shorts then you should consider Marlin's bolt-action tubes. I've enjoyed my 981T for many years now.
Like .22LRGUY......I've had my share of levers. Sold them after short ownership but my bolts have stayed.
