Hi,
What would be a rule of thumb as to what % of total value does a shotgun loose the minute it goes out of the store ?
For exemple what, in your opinion would be a fair price for a Browning 12 Ga Field 725 paid 2500 $ taxes included, the minute it goes out of the store ?
Thanks

I don't know about shotguns but apparently 10/22's seem to increase in value once it's left the shop and you've put some down the pipe!

Anything sold on equip exch seems to run on this principle.... I can't wait until I get 10,000 rds down my GSG and sell it for %50 more than I paid for it!

ON a serious note, I would not pay anything more than 75% of new price for something used.... sorry.....

It really depends on the gun.
For example limited runs lose very little and yes some will even increase pending how difficult it is to obtain another
On production run stuff that can still be purchased I would say 15-20% would cover most
Cheers

It does indeed depend on the gun, the avaliability and the demand. As an example, a little over a year ago I sold a CZ Ringneck 12 gauge. I fired it a total of 10 times and was basically new, still with the box. I paid $1080.00 plus taxes. I finally got $750.00 for it after being listed for over a month. So that was about a 30% loss.
But typically you can expect around a 20% loss on guns that are still widely available. If the gun is hard to get, then it might be a different story.

Also depends on the application and type of firearm. High grade wood, fancy engraving does not seem to hold its value in the way that Tactical or Police configurations do, this may have something to do with availability although these types of firearms are increasingly more common and being sold at ridiculous MSRP's.

I'm like a pawn shop. I pay 50% tops if it's a gun or a whole estate i Know i'm going to get rid of.i'll pay up to 80% if i want it to keep. A retail gun shop pays way less . For some reason,on this site people seem to think there going to get there taxes and shipping back. That stuff is gone forever the minute you pay for it.I only buy new if i cant find it used.

Of course the other factor is what you paid for the gun to begin with. Not all stores sell at the same price. So if you over paid from the get-go, then you are going to take a bigger loss.

25%-30% is the rule but like noted a savage model 77 12 ga that sold new in 1968 for $69.00 is on EE for $350 who would have thunk every piece of junk would turn into a investment grade gun . Just saying. No disrespect to savage owners

Not sure that would be a good investment. You could buy a lot more in 1968 with $69 than you can for $350 now. ;)

I get a chuckle out of what Winchester Model 88's & 100's are listed for now. The old timers will tell you they weren't particularly good guns in their time, but apparently their quality and accuracy improves with age ;)

Actually, with the quality of today's ammo they have improved in accuracy! I have an 88 that will hold its own with some high end bolt guns using Nosler Custom 165gr Accubond ammo. My grand-father swore it was a minute of 5 gallon pail with "good" ammo...whatever that meant back in the day?!! Of course the barrel had never been cleaned before I got my hands on it either! LOL!

As stated, it depends on demand and supply. A new 10/22 for $300 should sell used for about. $250 it goes for more than that not sure why? If your gun is worth $1000 new before tax at most dealers, it should bring $750 at the bottom to 900 at the top. Trade in at 75 % of what they will sell it for. ($560) As with all the numbers throwen around YMMV.

some guy is selling a kimber custom 2 for 1100... -_-
it's retarded what people are trying to get from others.

that gun, with taxes in, is 1050 max and stated he shot 200 bullets through it

Thanks for your input, The consensus seems to be around 25% of original price (without taxes and shipping)

But again remember that is based on how hard it is to find and how bad you want it
have a couple on my list since a while I would pay double the original price if available
Never mind what we say it is only money and in the end you are the one that has to be happy so use the comments as just that opinions
Many guys here go on about the EE but guess what I may have paid a bit too much for a gun but am shooting mine and they still have nothing to save a few % NOT ME life is too short
All the best
