I ordered a box of Wolf 9mm 124gr to try and noticed a few things when they arrived. First the quality of the bullets seem pretty bad and they are seated lower than AE in the same grain. I have attached a few pictures to show what I mean. Is this the norm with this ammo?

I don't see where a quality issue could be. As to seating depth: The bullet in the Wolf round may not have as thick a jacket as that on the AE round - which would explain the hundredths of an inch difference in length (presuming the bases are seated identically). A thinner jacket of copper, requires more (heavier) lead in the profile which will result in an overall smaller bullet. Similarily, some rounds have a mild steel core... much lighter than lead, although I don't think that is the case with AE.

I've used thousands of Wolf rounds (not any 9mm yet) and quality is good as factory rounds - I've only encounter two defective rounds (158gr 38spec SWC) from that.

Thanks for the info. I guess I won't know until I shoot it but judging by the appearance of the jacketing on the Wolf bullets compared to other brands $1 or $2 more I'd probably spend the extra buck.

American eagle is new ammo with jacketed rounds. Wolf is factory reloaded ammo with plated bullets.

Plated bullets tend to look bumpy etc because of the plating process. Jacketed bullets go through swaging dies which make for a smooth ###y bullet. They have different ogives (shape of the bullets nose) which explains the different seating depths.

If wolf works good (has the couple of boxes I've shot) and is plentiful then there is no reason not to use it.

I as well do not see where there is a quality issue with any Wolf ammo that I have used. If you stand a Speer Lawman 9mm TMJ - 124gr alongside a Wolf 9mm TMJ - 124gr and you will get the same picture. The Speer Lawman bullet is a little more pointed and conical than the more rounded bullet on a Wolf 9mm 124 gr bullet.

IMHO, after shooting the following amounts of Wolf 9mm ammo all I can say that I'm totally satisfied with it's quality and performance.

7080 RNDS WOLF 9mm TMJ 124 gr through a 9 mm Nighthawk Custom Commander.
2900 RNDS 9 mm Kimber Gold Match II
1150 RNDS 9 mm Beretta 92fs
600 RNDS 9 mm Boberg XR9-L

Alright so what I'm seeing is the difference between plated apposed to jacketed. I'm not trying to knock Wolf, as stated my comments are solely based on appearance alone. Speaking of Speer Lawman, I just got some of the 147gr TMJ and there appears to be rust on the casings? Is this the norm or perhaps has something to do with the way they were stored by the place I got them from?

Also why are there "notches?" around the middle of the casing on this AE 147gr FP?

Are they firing in your pistol ?
are they loading properly ?

I havent been able to take my G17 to the range yet. Here in Ontario you have to take an ATT course and then do 4 probationary shoots (1 per visit) with pistols provided by the club before you can get an ATT. I'm taking the course this weekend but considering my club is an hours drive it will be a little while before I can test them V:I:

it's just a bit of oxidization, no big deal.

the "notches" are called a cannelure which are put on at the base of the bullet to prevent the bullet from seating deeper in a semi auto while feeding from the mag.

what range?

I ran a few hundred .40 through my MP and never had any issues except for the huge cloud of smoke out front. They went bang every time but I found they were very dirt. It wasn't much cheaper than my usual source so I only purchased it when I could get from BDX or Western Munitions. BDX is so backed up now that they aren't selling retail anymore and Western Munitions is about the same price locally.

Plated bullets ok in glock? (G22 to be specific)

Yup, I think glock mentions only jacketed, but to hell with that. I shoot a mix of plated and lead out of my factory g17.

My buddy who has a glock 22 Gen 4 has put well over 15k of Berry's plated through it without issue.
