I am new to muzzzle loaders, but not new to shooting, reloading or casting.

I would like advise on casting projectiles for a newly aquired .50 cal in line. Hunting deer being the primary purpose.

I have had good success with the Lyman 12g slugs (the ones that look like jiant pellets). Can you buy just the sabbots and cast .45 cal projectiles, or would .50 cal be better. Soft lead seemed better in 12g, does this apply to muzzle loaders?

I have some .45 cal sabboted Hornady's.

As to sabots - yes you can buy them separately. I bought MMP sabots (green) and use them in my .50 with .44 cal cast lead bullets. Cabelas sells Thompson/Center sabots.

You should be able to use .50 cal cast lead bullets such as the Lee REAL 250 or 320 gr. Soft lead would expand better.

I would tend to agree with Pete - cast the pure lead .45s to place in sabots. My suggestion is to look to heavier boolits, like 350 grain. The reason for this is because the jacketed bullets in sabots are longer for calibre than cast tend to be. Due to the very fast twist of modern inlines, you would be looking at a 600+ grain full-calibre boolit to work with the twist.

Thanks. I have access to plenty of .45 molds, now to get some sabots.

Just wondering how you made out with your cast bullets and sabots.

At present, I only shoot traditional black powder, but I am always looking for something new to catch my interest.
I also cast pistol bullets and have seen some inexpensive inlines for sale on the exchange.

I have had some fun with the in line so far. The primary reason that I bought it was to extend hunting season in my area. I work in the North all winter.
I bought some .44/ .50 cal sabots and have tried several styles of pistol bullets that I cast with salvaged range lead, as well as some plated .44 bullets from Campro.
I also borrowed a mould and cast some round balls and mini balls.
I had few .45 cal Hornady (300g)bulets with sabots.
At 50m everything shot pretty well using pellets (2x50) or loose Pyrodex. I weighed it using the conversion chart(I don' t have volumetric measure)
At 100m the 240g cast and Horndy's worked best (about 2.5MOA) and still hit the mark at 50m and 150m
Lots of cleaning though.

I recall trying roundball/patch in a T/C Omega and had okay results out to 50 meters but IIRC things went to pot with anything other than a mild powder charge. I had good luck with 45 Colt cast bullets/ sabot.

How were the minie balls out to 100 meters?

The mini balls were slightly undersized. I couldn't effectively patch them, then tried a heavy application of Lee tumble lube, but they just seemed to be more work than necessary. Results were mixed at 50m, and I didn't even try 100. Maybe this weekend.
