silica bags

If it's damp it will absorb moisture and then it's useless.. You can but similar packs and containers..online and at some Gun shops.

Even at the dollar store for damp basements etc.

Yes it looses its "power" to absorb moisture but you can restore it just by placing it in the oven on "LOW" heat and leaving the door open. You're just drying it out.

There is a youtube video of some guy making them out of new, unscented cat litter. Seems a little bubba-ish but
he shows that the cat litter is mostly made up of silica and its incredibly cheap. He puts them in ammo cans
that he stores ammo in.

Lee Valley sells a canister type silica gel dehumidifier that you bake in the oven to dry out and re-use.
Looks good, too.

I used to have a couple large ones from one of the local gunshops. About two inches in diameter and five inches long, they were sold as safe dehumidifiers. Had instructions for drying/recharging in the oven, IIRC they changed colour when saturated. I used them with some success until a wrong move left silica particles all over the inside of my gun locker.

The bags I have are about 6"x6" and I oven bake them for about 6-8hrs @ 150-200F. Usually once a year. A friend of mine works in the oil patch and picked them up for me. Free is good.
